The John Whipple house was first built as a one room "half house"; the left side is the earliest part. It was expanded in 1670 by Capt. John Whipple (son of the first builder), with the addition of the right side of the house. A further expansion in 1700 by Major John Whipple (grandson) added an additional leanto at the rear of the house.
