Delaware

DELAWARE REGIMENT*

Authorized 9 December 1775 in the Continental Army as the Delaware Regiment. Organized 13 January 1776 to consist of eight companies from Kent, Sussex, and New Castle Counties. Assigned 27 February 1776 to the Middle Department. Relieved 5 August 1776 from assignment to the Middle Department and assigned to the Main Army. Assigned 25 August 1776 to Stirling's Brigade, an element of the Main Army. Relieved I September 1776 from assignment to Stirling's Brigade and assigned to Mifflin's Brigade (redesignated 8 October 1776 as Stirling's Brigade), an element of the Main Army.

Reorganized I January 1777 to consist of eight companies. Assigned 22 May 1777 to the 1st Maryland Brigade, an element of the Main Army. Relieved 22 July 1778 from the 1st Maryland Brigade and assigned to the 3d Virginia Brigade, an element of the Main Army. (Captain Allen McLane's Company assigned 16 December 1778; relieved from assignment 13 January 1779-see 2d Partisan Corps.)

Reorganized 12 May 1779 to consist of nine companies; concurrently, relieved from the 3d Virginia Brigade and assigned to the 2d Maryland Brigade, an element of the Main Army. (2d Maryland Brigade relieved 5 April 1780 from assignment to the Main Army and assigned to the Southern Department.)

Reorganized 3 September 1780 to consist of two companies. Relieved I January 1781 from the 2d Maryland Brigade and assigned to the Maryland Brigade, an element of the Southern Department. Expanded in summer 1781 to consist of four companies by the reorganization of two companies at Christiana Bridge. Reorganized 4 January 1782 to consist of two companies.

Furloughed 17 January 1783 at Christiana Bridge. Disbanded 15 November 1783.

Maryland

1st MARYLAND REGIMENT*

Authorized 14 January 1776 in the Maryland State Troops as the Maryland Battalion. Organized in spring 1776 at Baltimore and Annapolis, to consist of nine companies from northern and western Maryland.

Assigned 6 July 1776 to the Main Army. Assigned 12 August 1776 to Stirling's Brigade, an element of the Main Army. Adopted 17 August 1776 into the Continental Army. Relieved 31 August 1776 from Stirling's Brigade and assigned to McDougall's Brigade, an element of the Main Army. Maryland Independent Companies (see 2d Maryland Regiment) attached 19 September 1776. Relieved 10 November 1776 from McDougall's Brigade. Assigned 10 December 1776-January 1777 to Mercer's Brigade, an element of the Main Army.

Reorganized and redesignated in January 1777 as the Ist Maryland Regiment, to consist of eight companies. Assigned 22 May 1777 to the 1st Maryland Brigade, an element of the Main Army.

Reorganized 12 May 1779 to consist of nine companies. (Ist Maryland Brigade relieved 5 April 1780 from the Main Army and assigned to the Southern Department.) Relieved I January 1781 from the Ist Maryland Brigade and assigned to the Maryland Brigade, an element of the Southern Department.

Assigned 6 July-15 August 1776 to the Main Army. Adopted 17 August 1776 into the Continental Army.

and summer 1777 at Williamsburg, Virginia, to consist of ten companies, including the Virginia State Artillery Company [see Annex 1] and the Virginia Continental Artillery Company [see Annex 2].

Relieved 13 March 1778 from the Southern Department and assigned to the Main Army. Redesignated 10 August 1779 as the Ist Continental Artillery Regiment. Relieved 17 April 1780 from the Main Army and assigned to the Southern Department.

Reorganized 9 May 1780 to consist of twelve companies, including the Maryland Continental Artillery Companies [see Annex 3]. Reorganized I January 1781 to consist of ten companies. Furloughed in summer 1783 at Winchester, Virginia, and Baltimore, Maryland. Disbanded 15 November 1783.

Annex 1

Authorized 11 January 1776 in the Virginia State Troops as the Virginia State Artillery Company. Organized in spring 1776 at Williamsburg. Redesignated 26 November 1776 as a company in Harrison's Continental Artillery Regiment.

Annex 2

Authorized 19 March 1776 in the Continental Army as the Virginia Continental Artillery Company and assigned to the Southern Department. Organized in summer 1776 at Williamsburg. Redesignated 27 November 1776 as a company in Harrison's Continental Artillery Regiment.
