"At age sixteen, Daniel Ball first entered the service of the United States in December 1779. He was drafted into the Militia in Franklin County, North Carolina, under Capt. Richard Ransome, Brigadier General Alexander Lillington's command. Due to illness he was discharged 10 March 1780, at Charleston, South Carolina. A few months later, in June or July 1780, Daniel volunteered, and entered service again in Franklin County, under Capt. Harrison Mason in the Regiment commanded by Col. William Brickell. This Regiment proceeded to South Carolina and joined the Continental Army under General Gates, participating in the BATTLE OF CAMDEN. Following the defeat by the British under Cornwallis, the Americans dispersed ( Only 700 of 4000 men escaped - among the survivors was General Gates.) Daniel Ball was one of those who gained sanctuary in Hillsborough, North Carolina, and he was given a furlough to go home to Franklin County, North Carolina. After a short time he rejoined his Regiment, and was discharged 21 October 1780. In May 1781, Daniel Ball again volunteered for service in CASWELL COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA, and served as a sergeant in the company commanded by Capt. Shadrack Hargis. He was assigned to guard military stores in Hillsborough, and was discharged 27 August 1781. He last volunteered in Caswell County, and served two months as orderly sergeant under Capt. Frederick Debo by whom he was discharged at Hillsborough on 20 April 1782. "

On June 7, 1832, the United States Congress passed a new Pension Act, providing an annual stipend for Veterans of the Revolutionary War. Daniel Ball, a resident of Buncombe County, aged 69, applied for benefits and made his sworn declaration in Buncombe County Court, October 17, 1832. His pension was approved and he was entered on the Roll of North Carolina to receive $40.00 per annum. When Daniel Ball died in Buncombe County 27 Sept. 1844, his widow, ANN, aged 85, applied for a pension 4 October, 1845, under the Act of Congress, passed 17 June 1844 providing for widows of Revolutionary War veterans. ANN BALL made her declaration before Nehemiah Blackstock, Justice of the Peace for Buncombe County, and produced a written statement of her marriage to DANIEL BALL. She was approved and granted a pension of $40.00 per Annum.
