This book focuses on just one day in the Normandy campaign, 1st July 1944, and the actions of elements of 49th (West Riding) Division; in particular the 1st Tyneside Scottish. One veteran of the battle, Major John Samson, began collecting first hand accounts of the action immediately after the war, and these form the core of this current publication. However, the author has carried out extensive additional research and this has resulted in an almost blow by blow account of the fighting around Rauray - certainly unparalleled in previous studies of the Normandy campaign.

The book is well illustrated with numerous previously unpublished photographs, and the author has produced his own, highly detailed and excellent maps - most of which are in colour. Indeed, the whole book is a high quality production, and the author and publishers are to be congratulated on this. It has certainly set a high standard for future accounts of the fighting in the Bocage, and no-one with a serious interest in WW2 and Normandy should be without a copy. Highly recommended.
