PIPERS MEMORIAL, LONGUEVAL

The Pipers Memorial, which commemorate regimental Pipers who served in British and Commonwealth forces during the Great War, began as an idea in February 2000. Following a period of fundraising by those both on the Somme and in the United Kingdom, the memorial was unveiled on 20th July 2002, in the presence of several Scottish pipe-bands; among them the Black Watch and London Scottish.

Sculpted by Andy de Comyn of Birmingham, the memorial takes the form of a piper in full battle gear and tin helmet, exiting the trenches over a sandbagged parapet. It is more than four metres tall, and at the rear is a low wall displaying the badges of units known to have had pipe bands.

It is sited in the middle of the village of Longueval, where men of the 9th (Scottish) Division fought in July 1916.
