LE TOMMY CAFÉ, POZIÈRES

Pozières Trench, Le Tommy Café 2003.

Pozières was the main Australian battlefield on the Somme in 1916. During the fighting from July to September 1916 the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) suffered more than 23,000 casualties - almost as many as at Gallipoli the previous year. Indeed, the 2nd Australian Division at the Pozières Windmill site records

Australians fell more thickly on this battlefield than any other of the war...

Local Great War enthusiast and collector Dominique Zanardi purchased the old Burma Star café at Pozières in the mid-1990s. Since then he has turned it into a great place to eat and drink, and has filled the bar with a whole host of WW1 memorabilia and unique photographs. In the garden is an extensive trench system, dug out by Dominique, with a British and Australian trench on one side, and German trench on the other. The trenches are full of original uniforms, equipment and weaponry, and while you cannot walk in them, you can walk all round them and look in.

The Le Tommy Café offers food, drink and accommodation to battlefield visitors. Entrance to view the trenches is free. Groups must book at least once in advance. Evening meals are available on some nights, and there is a weekly militaria fair every Saturday afternoon.

From 2005 the Café has been extended and now has an even larger restaurant area.
