HISTORY

Fampoux is a village and commune in the Department of the Pas-de-Calais, close to Arras and on the north bank of the river Scarpe. Happy Valley British Cemetery is about two miles south of it, on the other side of the Scarpe and close to the village of Monchy-le-Preux village. "Happy Valley" was the name given to the long valley which runs due east from Orange Hill, and along which British troops fought their way on the 10th/11th April 1917 during the fighting for Monchy. The cemetery was started by units from the 12th (Eastern) Division, and used again by the 4th Division in December 1917 when the lines had stabilised on Infantry Hill. It contains the graves of 75 soldiers from the United Kingdom, of whom six are unidentified; and a Special Memorial is erected to a soldier known to be buried in one of the unnamed graves. The Cemetery covers an area of 419 square yards, and it is bounded by a concrete curb and a thorn hedge. It lies in the valley, now close to the A1 Paris motorway.

LOCATION

Fampoux is a village 7 KM east of Arras (D33). Happy Valley British Cemetery is 5 KM south of the village down a 2 kilometre track on the road to Monchy-le-Preux. It is reached by a path.
