One notable feature of the Western Front battlefields is the lack of German war cemeteries. This often confuses modern visitors, but what is clear is that the Germans established large numbers of war cemeteries and burial grounds during the war. That few remain says more about the post-war attitude of some allied nations, rather than any callous approach to commemoration on the part of the German people.

One of the few parts of the British sector where there are more than usual numbers of German cemeteries is the sector between Armentières and La Bassée. This part of the site will look at these cemeteries - information about their history is at best incomplete and if you can add anything more then please get in touch.
