Thomas Jones was born into humble origins in the Cheshire town of Runcorn on Christmas Day 1880. Educated locally, he left school at 14 and worked as a fitter. Before the war he was well known as a keen footballer, and crack shot in the local Volunteer and Territorial units. When war came in 1914 he joined the Cheshire Regiment, and served overseas with the 1st Battalion from 1915. During the Battle of the Somme, he was awarded a Victoria Cross for capturing single-handedly more than 100 German prisoners at Morval; a record during the war. He served until the end of the war, also being awarded the DCM in 1918.
Dave Thompson excellent little book is the result of several years research into the life of 'Todger' Jones VC, and tells in some detail the story of his early life, exploits at the front, and his final years until his death in 1956. There are numerous illustrations, many of which have never been in print before, and production quality is high.
Dave Thompson's book serves as a model example of how research into an individual soldier can be made of interest to a wider public, and the book will appeal to anyone with an interest in the Great War, the VC or the Battle of the Somme. Recommended.
