The following subsection provides information on magazines in field fortifications as they were designed and constructed during the American Civil War. By their very nature as subterranean structures constructed using very porous materials subject to a high rate of decomposition magazines were very dangerous. The danger posed by these structures tended to increase over time as the materials weakened.
