because the information is so long and i am only looking for a few things...you should make a layout of where to find the information and what each paragraph is about...lets say i wanted to know who was killed...then i could look at this page and know what paragraphy it is on.

I just read your profile of Henry Clay and while impressed by the information and passion you display, there are a number of grammatical and spelling errors that would be poor for a high school graduate, let alone for academics. The most common and glaring of these is the constant use of "it's", the abbrievation of "it is", for "its" the possessive. All possessive pronouns, such as his, hers, theirs and its, do not use the apostrophe. Apart from that, there are a number of spelling errors, such as "prescadents" instead of "precedents", that should be picked up a ordinary spell-checker. There are other spellings and uses of phrases that are incorrect throughout the profile. I really enjoyed the profile and that's why it bothered me to see the above problems. This is important and inspiring information and yet it's poorly presented. Furthermore, and perhaps more importantly, you offer your site as a resource for school children and if your language use is off, it's going to confuse them. Other than that, keep up the good work in providing important and inspiring information on significant, and often neglected, historical figures. Cheers, Dan
Editor's note: Point well taken. Please remember we are Dutch: we do try hard to correct the mistakes - as in this case - as soon as someone points them out. Thank you. GMW

Your site is great, but you should get info on the 1775 laws and what happened if you don't obey them. But If I ever have an assignment that I can use your info for then I'll come here. But I just wanted to say that if you have 1775 laws that would have helped me pass a project that is due in 5 days.

I see that you are looking for biographies. A few years ago I sent you a paper on General Horatio Gates titled: "General Horatio Gates: A Matter of Honor." The paper concerns itself with Gates reputation after the Battle of Camden, S.C. I think you would find it most interesting. I believe that you received it sometime in early 2000. I'll try to retrieve it, if the article is not in your possession. Please advise, John B. Hoey.

I only have one comment: that someone proof read the text. I noticed some misspelled words from the Declaration of Independence in the heading. The words are "selfevident" (should have a hyphen between the words) "unalienabfr" and "lift". I've copied the heading below from your site.

Congratulations for a great, non-profit history site. I was astounded to find it sponsored by a Dutch university. I come from Pilgrim, Puritian, Dutch, Quaker, and Scotch-Irish colonial stock and now appreciate them more all the time. Is this a great nation or what.

John Tyler's dates are conflicting. One says 1790-1842 and the other 1790-1862. However, a book I have (The Comlete Idiot's Guide to the American Presidents)lists his dates as 1790-1850. I'm really not sure which is correct. I'm going to check other sources, but I thought you'd like to know.

"For this reason society requires that the education of youth should be watched with the most scrupulous attention. Education, in a great measure, forms the moral characters of men, and morals are the basis of government. Education should therefore be the first care of a legislature; not merely the institution of schools, but the furnishing of them with the best men for teachers. A good system of education should be the first article in the code of political regulations; for it is much easier to introduce and establish an effectual system for preserving morals, than to correct by penal statutes the ill effects of a bad system. The goodness of a heart is infinitely more consequence to society than an elegance of manners; nor will any superficial accomplishments repair the want of principle in the mind. It is always better to be vulgarly right than politically wrong....The education of youth [is] an employment of more consequence than making laws and preaching the gospel, because it lays the foundation on which both law and gospel rest for success." Furthermore, "Republican government loses half of its value, where the moral and social duties are....negligently practiced. To exterminate our popular vices is a work of far more importance to the character and happiness of our citizens, than any other improvements in our system of education." Noah Webster

I think your biography of Richard Henry Lee needs some revision. According to other sources he was the 3rd of 6 brothers, not the eldest of 4 brothers (Philip Ludwell and Thomas were older). He also had 2 sisters (Hannah and Alice). (See http://www.stratfordhall.org/).

I appreciate all of the information on this web site. It was very thorough and informative. However, I have been searching for pictures from John Adams time in office all day and there just are not any on any of the websites. All I get are bust shots of him. I need pictures of things like the White House when he first moved in, his mansion, and family portraits. I think that this would be a great addition to the site and very helpful for students like me who are trying to do reports and presentations.

I'm not a huge fan of Jonathan Edwars, but your report on him is farce and caricature. Are you aware that Edwards was a missionary to the Indians for years? That the message of his seminal works is that over-emotionalism is not a true sign of faith and that he tried to restrain his audiences from such actions. I find this report ignorant and unscholarly.

I read some of the negative comments and would prefer to applaud your efforts. Our (U.S.) history has been re-written many, many times and during those re-writes the contributions of many in the development of this land have been ignored. However, in history, there is much that we can learn to lead us into a future where the United States lives up to its promise of freedom and justice for all. Continue with your efforts.

I am an 8th grade student in a History class. On a test, my teacher has marked wrong that the New Jersey Plan at the Constitutional Convention during America's pre- union days had only 1 house in the Congress. In many encyclopedias and the articles on this site it has not noted clearly whether the New Jersey Plan proposed by William Paterson had a one house legislature or not. My history book proves that I'm right but my teacher hasn't told me so. He claims that he needs more time. I am wondering if I could be wrong and the history book is also wrong...

When will the attorneys and judges go read the history of the "income tax" and discern the original intent of the legal kickback?
When in reality, the "income tax" is a legal kickback, not a tax.

We must show them the law and the original intent and call their interpretation HUMBUG!
We have to go to the origin of the Tax, 1862, and see what the Law reads to determine original intent.

This is clearly a Government employee kickback.
They make their living off the bogus interpretation of "gross income" being promulgated to the public.
They can only control the revenue they have, hence INTERNAL REVENUE!
There is no law that makes those not getting any "wages" or remuneration from the Federal Government, part of the legal kickback program called "income tax"!
The tax of 1862 did not change the status of non-government employees.
The definition of "gross income" in the Revenue Act of 1918, makes it clear only revenue internal to the Federal Government is included in "gross income".
The answer is NEITHER.

Recodifying the IR Code has made the term "gross income" so vague that the public sector actually believes the "income tax" is a tax and they too must pay it.
Recodifying does not change the original meaning and intent of the Statute.

It is not an indirect tax, despite the fact the Supreme Court has ruled the "income tax" takes the form of an indirect excise.
It is not a tax at all. It is a legal kickback called a return of income.
It is a very impressive website. I commend the hard work that has gone into your efforts to present a site with access to so many primary sources for the study of the history of our great nation.

In 1918, it's still clear the Federal Government is the source of "gross income". With the 1954 recodification the definition of "gross income" does not even resemble the 1918 definition.

I would be honoured if you posted it because we all know how accurate American History is and the thought of leaving any small detail out would be insanely un-questionable. After the 16th amendment was "ratified", the Revenue Act of 1918, c. 18,40 Stat.1057, enacted by Congress on February 24, 1919, specifically placed the compensation for personal services of Federal judges and the U.S. President under the definition of "gross income" in an attempt to bring them into the existing kickback program. That statute reads:
