There's a faint pattern in early euro-american history I'm sure someone must have a hold on. I refer to the constant push to shove match reccurrent, for instance, with the euro-amerind conflicts or nasty irish confrontations. What has repeatedly driven the english to justify drastic violence with minor offenses they instigated in the first place, and how does this pattern relate to recurring roman motifs? Suggestions, please; floundering on the edge of indistinct notions.

I have just finished reading Philip Keffer's essay on The Seven Years War. Excellent. Through all my searching on the internet for information about this topic, I have only been able to find timelines and the barest of references. Thank you for giving me a bigger picture of what happened. I found your site through an Alta Vista search for 'Seven Years War'. Being new to the internet, I haven't aquired skills in searching for topics, but I'm learning. Even though I have sites to many databases and history related topics, your site was the easiest and most complete. Good work. My interest in history started with C.S. Forrester's Horaito Hornblower series that I started to read last year. That led to Patrick O'Brian's and James L. Nelson's series of fighting sailing ships. That led to wanting to know more about the political scene and why everyone was fighting. Thank you again for your excellent web site. Please continue to provide your superior quality information. It is greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Judy Davis-Goble Wakeman, Ohio

Thanks!! You have a great site. I found it to be very enlightening. Imagine all the historical documents that I wasn't taught about in high school and didn't even know that they existed until a few years ago all in one place. I have down loaded some of them for home study and I plan to use them to teach my 14 year old daughter about her country also, as the local schools seem to be doing a great job of avoiding teaching any history at all. Again THANKYOU

This is fantastic. I wandered here looking for the names of those who signed the Declaration of Independence from North Carolina and found them almost immediately--a refreshing change from most of my efforts at research on the web. I will be back to take some time and look into the wealth of material you are compiling. Keep up the good (and hard) work.

Hello, I am presently involved in editing a booklet entitled The U.S. Constitution and Fascinating Facts about It. It has a section on the Founding Fathers and includes Thomas Jefferson and John Adams among them. This is the crux of my question: Since Jefferson and Adams were out of the country at the time of the Constitutional Convention, would you consider them Founding Fathers? My understanding has been that the 55 men who attended the Convention in Philadelphia (and directly contributed to the writing of the Constitution) would technically be classified as Founding Fathers. I also realize that Madison and Jefferson had correspondence during this time period, and that Jefferson felt the Articles of Confederation could work with proper changes (he did not approve of the Constitution without a bill of rights and wanted rotation in office for the president). I have taught United States History for twenty-seven years and A.P. United States History for fourteen years. The textbook we use (Thomas Bailey and David Kennedy, The American Pageant even considers Daniel Shays to be a Founding Father. I feel if you add Thomas Jefferson and especially John Adams to that category, you would have to add Thomas Paine, Samuel Adams, John Hancock, etc. Lumping all of these people together as Founding Fathers perpetuates that confusion most people seem to have between the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. I would appreciate your thoughts on this issue. Sincerely, Terry Jordan [email protected] http://www.orangeschools.org/OHS/TeacherPGs/TJordan/Pages/index.html

Thank you ever so much for the information regarding the initial years of colonial American and its impact regarding the 7 years war and the relationships between the French and the British and then with the English and the colonials. This of course led to the French assistance to America during the Revolutionary period. Your assistance provided much more material than the Compton's Living Encyclopedia in many area. I should ace the exam!!!

As you restructure, please remember that not all computer monitors display colors - and many that do are set for black and white in order to speed access to information. Shapes, symbols, even shades of gray clearly distinctive from one another may, I suggest, be worthy considerations.

Thank you for your efforts to present such a large amount of information. One note: when reading the Magna Carta (I assume your other Documents would have the same problem), when I go off page to look something up in an online dictionary and then return, the very end of the document is presented on the screen. Almost all current documents online have fixed this problem (other sites), and I wish you would fix it too. Necessitates keeping notes as to exactly where one is at in the current document in order to find that same place on return. Very antiquated. Thanks and Cheers!

The information you provide on the colonial period is too limited. You need to focus more on its diversity. I did not find a single reference to slavery. Thats really amazing. There were enslaved African Americans building this country too during the colonial period.

We revived "America's 1st College" five years ago for American Heritage Continuing Education. A Primary focus has been the Three Virginia Charters as THE founding documents of American Civilization. Our contention is that the 1776 War for Independence was fought to KEEP the liberties we already had via the Va Charters. Would you like some of our thoughts on this?

Ark Valley Heritage River Coalition, 532 South Bluff, Wichita Kansas 67218-2120...316-683-0065, We are nominating the ARKANSAS RIVER through a 4-state area for designation by the President as one of 10 American Heritage Rivers in Janurary 1998. see www.epa.gov go to search:HERITAGE RIVERS The Santa Fe Trail follows the river for over 300miles, it was once the border between Mexico, The Republic of Texas used that border, Towns like Dodge City Kansas aer along its banks, The mouth at the Mississippi is older than New Orleans, and much more. We know of a Western Govenors Conference initiative to create a virtual University without walls, with a site in each of its member states. It will be called the Western Governors University, and will offer degrees/certificates in areas that business has jobs for. We would like to create a River University that could create opportunities for education while traveling the 1,459 mile river! We are pushing heritage/history the most! This could become an opportunity for the internet Universite of history to expand. Texas is a member state, and will have a site. contact gov. Bush for more information. We could use any letters of support/nomination for the river from historians that recognize the major role the river has played in this country's heritage. The address is at the begining of this message. Thank You

As a student of the American Revolution period, in particular the involvement of German auxiliary troops employed by the British to fight the rebellion, I find your project to be a great help. The most interesting part as far as I am concerned, is the fact that half of the German population of the American colonies was fighting for the King and the other half with the rebels. And to top that off, standing at the big monument at Yorktown I noticed the casualty plaques of the various combatants, and there you could read the names of Germans serving in the British troops, the Hessian troops, the American troops, and last not least, the French troops. What a price to pay.

Dear Sir or Madam: My name is Abraham Piontnica and I am the President of Executive Internet Consulting (EIC). EIC was formed with the express purpose of providing Internet related products and services to specific sectors of the educational, business, and professional communities. We have already produced the critically acclaimed "The Internet Guide for Everyone," a 100 minute instructional video on how to use the Internet (currently being distributed in schools and libraries throughout the United States and internationally by recognized leaders in the educational instructional market, including, among others, GPN and TV Ontario) and "The Internet Guide for Professionals - Legal Reference Guide" (a reference guide distributed to law firms and Federal and State governmental agencies. EIC is happy to announce that it is in the process of completing an educational reference guide that will contain lists of web (and non-web) sites, mailing lists, and newsgroups of interest to the educational community (k-12, college and post-graduate). In this regard, because of the quality and content of your site, our staff has recommended that I contact you and make the following requests: 1. We would like to include your site in the reference guide. If you would like to be included in the guide, please provide us with the following information: (i) official name of site, (ii) URL, and a (iii) brief description of the contents of the site (if desired, you may chose to segment your site by category (e.g., k-12 and University )). Please only provide a 2-3 sentence description, unless you feel your site is comprehensive enough to warrant a lengthier description. Also, please provide us with a list of categories you would like to be listed under (e.g., history, biology, government agency, library, commercial, not-for profit, k-12, university). An example of the format we are following is as follows: "State Agencies: Louisiana Department of Education http://www.doe.state.la.us/ Locate publicly accessible information including conferences, workshops, employee and school district directories, employment, grant information and content standards and much more from the Louisiana Department of Education." NOTE - There is NO charge for inclusion in the guide. EIC reserves the right to modify your description of the site as our editors determine for consistency, accuracy, and content. 2. We would also like to include all or a part of the educational sites (and descriptions thereof) provided in your website in the guide. If this is used, appropriate attribution and credit will be cited in the guide. 3. Of particular interest to us would be lists of newsgroups and mailing lists (with descriptions and instructions for subscribing). We appreciate all your help in the completion of the guide and hope that it will be a source of valuable information to the entire educational community. We also believe that our distribution network will enable us to reach the broadest educational market available and will serve to enhance both of our organizations. Your assistance in this endeavor is greatly appreciated. We hope to make the guide available as soon as possible so your prompt response would be greatly appreciated. Please e-mail your response to my attention at [email protected]. Thank you. Abraham D. Piontnica President

I am currently teaching a section of United States history at Ivy Tech State College in Kokomo, Indiana, and am using this site as a resource for my students. I have made extensive use of your material in my US History I class, and have found the documents and essays particularly useful as starting points for discussion. The class I am teaching now, however, covers the Civil War to present, and I notice a dearth of information on that period. I hope you are planning on expanding your offerings there. In the future, a possible class project could be the creation of some material that would help to fill the gaps in information now existing. Anyway, thanks for the site -- it is wonderful!

I am an Adjunct Professor of History at William Paterson University of New Jersey. I would be willing to contribute to your project. I think that it is well done and worthwhile. Although I have offered a work on George Kennan and Containment I see that you already have a contribution on that topic. Perhaps I could contribute something on Ronald Reagan or the Bay of Pigs. Let me know if either of these are of interest. I have done some work on both of these topics.

Regarding The Story of Ethan Allen--A nice effort but there are many inaccuracies. Why no original sources? There are many, many -- including Ethan Allen's own writing such as Reason, The Only Oracle of Man, etc. I wrote my honors thesis on the same subject in 1963 for Upsala College, East Orange, New Jersey. If author Doug Robertson wishes to discuss, he should contact me at by e-mail.

My teacher, Mr. Hart, is a wonderful lecturer, and he has made a boring subject interesting. I then found these articles on the Internet and found that they helped me tremendously in understanding what happened. I will continue to use and print them and have even shared some of them with my teacher, who thought they were great. Keep up the good work. P.S. Timelines are especially helpful!!!!

The speech from the nergo convention in august of 1865 validates what the Rebels where frighting for. Right from the start, you have a race who is own by the Federal Goverment and even to this day, has never known freedom. All that was accomplished by the Federal victory was the steady and slow enslavement of all the peoples of America.

I am very pleased with this site, tho I have a lot of exploring yet to do, and you seem NOT to have used the spell-checker in WordPerfect. I am also pleased that it started as a project of a Dutch university, in that a significant part of my ancestry is Dutch, from the Nieuw Nederland days of U.S./New York State history. My present concern in accessing your site is in creating eze Reder texts, in which standard spelling will be on one page and a phonetic text on the facing page, to ease the task of people whose first language is not English in reading important works in English. eze Reder texts will constitute a ready-reference to the pronunciation of English words whose pronunciation is otherwise almost entirely unguessable, such as "knight" (niet in Fantik, the simplified spelling employed by eze Reder texts). In due course, I'll send you a sample of transliterated text from something on your own webpage to show you how this works.

Hi there, I was wondering why it is so hard to find earlier American history? As in leading up to the war. My ancestors came to this country around 1550, and were part of the nobles under Dutch rule. It is almost impossible to find anything on the Dutch settling of New Amsterdam, now called New York. I even have proof that George Washington stayed at the Kip's Bay Inn on Manhatten Island. If you could lead me in another direction, it would be most appreciated! Thanks, David Kipp

Many of my students and other teachers have complained that they get error messages. I would love to have the students use this site, but I seem to be the only one able to access it on a regular basis. Any suggestions? Thank you.

I think that if you are looking at a person's biography you should be able to click a button that will show you where a certain topic of that persons life is in the biography. For instance, if you were looking up John Dickenson and you wanted to know what part he played in the Constitution you could click on a button that would show you what paragraph to look. This site is very easy to access. I will use this site again because it is very well orginized.

I am looking for paper topics for my American Economic History Class, in which I read two classic books or three classic papers that take OPPOSING viewpoints. I am supposed to summarize the key issues, identify the crucial pieces of evidencem identify the weakest links in the argument, and suggest some future research that might help resolve the debate. I am considering doing my paper on the opposing viewpoints of Hamilton and Jefferson on the creation of the First National Bank of the U.S. What books or papers were written by Hamilton and Jefferson on this topic which obviously would take opposing viewpoints? I have a question for the forum: I recently took a tour through the Hermitage in Nashville. A question I had was: why the beds in the gentlemen's bedrooms were so high...I was told in the days of the Southern plantations, the gentlemen ahd their male slaves sleep under their beds so they would be accessible at all times...and the women had their attendants sleep at the foot of their beds on trundles for the same reason. It would solve a disagreement I am having the local historian to know if this is true...Can you help?

I think that you should put the explorers that found america in here because that's a big part of american history and that's what I was looking for because I have to do a report on a conquestador for humanities.

Doing a research project on Manifest Destiny and Westward Expansion; a friend recommended this site so I thought I'd try it out. E-mail me if you have any information concerning Manifest Destiny and its relationship to the Mexican American War of 1846.

Try to get biographies on [Mitchell, William], and [Bong, Richard] They are known as the World War I and World War II flying aces, and are the founding fathers of the Air Force. Thank you, this would help me very much, Signed, Nikki Swafford
