In 1936, the new BA-20 superseded the FAI-M. This was based on the GAZ-M1 chassis, but had thicker armor and angled turret plates. The initial command versions had a clothes-line antennae, but the improved BA-20M had a whip antennae. The BA-20ZhD rail scout version was also built in small numbers. Production of the BA-20 was undertaken by the Vykunskiy factory. In 1939, Vykunskiy factory designed a variant of the BA-20, using the new 6 x 4 GAZ-21 lorry, designated as BA-21 but the project was terminated. Zavod #38 also designed a variant, using the GAZ-22 chassis, known as LB-23 but only a prototype was built.
