EVOLUTION OF THE SOUTHERN (NOW NORFOLK SOUTHERN) SYSTEM

East Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia

The East Tennessee & Virginia and the East Tennessee & Georgia merged in 1869 to form the East Tennessee, Virginia & Georgia which became the dominant rail system in East Tennessee.  The ETV&G absorbed the Memphis & Charleston in 1884, thus extending its influence toward the west end of the state.

Southern Railway

The ETV&G fell under the control of the Richmond & Danville (an antebellum Virginia railroad) in 1887, and subsequently became part of the Southern Railway system which was organized in 1894.  The enormous Southern system retained its corporate identity for nearly ninety years.  The Southern merged with the Norfolk & Western in 1982 to form the Norfolk Southern.
