EVOLUTION OF THE ILLINOIS CENTRAL (NOW CN/IC) SYSTEM

Gulf, Mobile & Ohio

The antebellum Mobile & Ohio was absorbed into the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio in 1940.

Illinois Central

The Illinois Central (an antebellum Illinois railroad) became the dominant West Tennessee system after absorbing the Mississippi Central in 1877 and the Mississippi & Tennessee in 1889.  It became the Illinois Central Gulf upon absorbing the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio in 1972, but reverted to the Illinois Central name in 1990.  In 1999 the Illinois Central merged with the Canadian National, creating an enormous international railroad covering much of North America.
