Shacklock & Company remains an example of
how war brings all trades together in the effort to build a well-oiled
war machine. W. D. Shacklock conducted business as a Memphis Jeweler.
When the war commenced, he put his trade to use for the Confederate war
effort. His firm manufactured fine artillary implements and the sighting
of cannon. Shacklock & Company sighted a number of cannon at
Columbus, Kentucky, and at other fortifications located along the Mississippi
River. While records show that the firm casted no cannon of its own,
a cannon sight base does survive which is marked "SHACKLOCK & CO.,
MEMPHIS, TENN."
