K-Big-Blunder

The webmaster of WKBWradio.com wants to THANK all the KB fans who have made their thoughts known of the recent format change at WWKB. From great oldies/rock 'n roll to left wing talk radio! The guestbook area was becoming overwhelmed  with so many entries that it has slowed the entire web site to a crawl! For that, we thank you !

Entercom,  please do a favor to all your former listeners and just "PULL THE PLUG!!" If nothing else, give WKBW/WWKB a respectable death! After the first format change, when Entercom bought WKBW, at least they allowed an on-the-air goodbye. On February 6, 2006  the rock 'n roll/oldies format was just cancelled. The door to great radio was slammed into the face of many, many WKBW radio fans! No farewell, no time to wish their radio personalities good luck and good bye. Possibly someone was embarrassed for not promoting and selling a proven format? You need more than old records, familiar personalities...you need promotion! Someone in the corporate hierarchy of Entercom was oblivious to the fans worldwide of WWKB/WKBW and did what they do best... slash! After all...it's just business. Oh what a mistake!

We have removed all the great comments offered in the WKBWradio.com's guestbook concerning the recent "K-BIG-BLUNDER."  We do not want to taint the wonderful guestbook entries remembering the great KB Radio! We have however, preserved these "blunder" comments and present them here!

Thank you...fans of WKBW Radio!

Radio station takes columnist back

The Tonawanda News

For the first time since the Bills-era Super Bowls, I wandered the shops and businesses around Kenmore this week and heard some consensus in conversation. It was not agreement over the State of the Union, or the state of the Sabres, or the state to which our children are moving. It was a lament about radio.

For those of us of a certain age who grew up here, adolescence came with a common soundtrack, the AM radio station WKBW. Its startlingly inclusive rock ‘n’ roll playlist, hyperkinetic disc jockeys, machine gun-like delivery of the news and genuine commitment to its listeners made it an integral part of growing up in Buffalo. From 1958 to the rise of album-oriented rock radio in the early 70s, it ruled the ratings and won the hearts of its dedicated fans. In more ways than one, we grew up with this stuff.

Renamed WWKB, the radio station everyone called “KB” later foundered through a number of formats and last year returned to its roots. The yappy old announcers with the same chatter, catchphrases and sound effects; the songs we sang while cruising Sheridan Drive; even the occasional jingle for Sattlers and Kobackers; they were all back.

An “all request party” of moldy oldies was presented on Saturday nights. If we 50-somethings needed to hear a certain prom song, a doowop tune we could explain to our grandchildren, or merely needed a dose of Ray Charles, this was our chance to call in. It was as though a radio signal from 1965 was beamed into space, bounced off a planet, and retuned 40 years later. It was as refreshing as a day at Crystal Beach.

Suddenly this week, it all disappeared like a happy, nostalgic dream. KB fired its personnel, junked this remarkable roll down memory lane and installed an all-news talk format. One Web site already is referring to this purge as “the day the music died.” Granted, the ratings were anemic, typically around 1.7 when the most popular radio stations in town snared nines and 10s. But, like half a lifetime ago, the people who enjoyed it, enjoyed it a lot. Thus, I observed plenty of disappointment and overheard plenty of grousing this week in the dry cleaners, in the libraries and in the stores of Kenmore.

This being the 21st century, even we old-timers know myriad ways to capture the music of our youth, and even a few ways to recapture youth itself. Perhaps it was a case study, to see if one could make money catering to the needs of baby boomers by returning them to their past. Nonetheless, it was a joyful experiment. I heard a number of synthesizer-free songs about cars and romance for the first time in years, surprising myself by still knowing all the lyrics (and if I could only have applied that capability to my schoolwork). I heard references to high schools that aren’t there anymore and to places with evocative names like Club Zanzibar and Pat’s Drive-In. And if I didn’t enjoy every minute of growing up, I truly enjoyed this time-warp lens KB was using to give my adolescence back to me. So did a lot of people.

As usual, it's all about the money and to hell with the listeners. Does anyone know where Jack Armstrong went. Would love to email him.

I hope that this so called left radio doesn't last!! So I hope to hear you guys on the air again!!

Thank you for the memories and the jokes that made my job a little more bearable! Rick Christensen

Comments: Hello:
I am extremely disappointed with the station's recent format change. It is very annoying to be forced to listen to much of the incessant garbage that seems to be a product of the AM dials. Whatever happened to be being entertained? I enjoy listen to music while driving in my car, especially the oldies. Bring back the old format!!!!!

Maybe if you told potential advertisers that you serve more than the Buffalo region this may never have happened!

This Reid dude certainly can't spin records...but can spin the listening public. I remember well when the station did not renew the contract with the Buffalo Bisons and UB hoops he wanted for the station to "concentrate" on the music. Funny how that so called pretzel logic came full circle when SNARP was displaced for Buffalo Bandits lacrosse and UB hoops again....you've got to be kidding. Anyhow if the listening public like myself who would want to stick it to these unintelligent high school grads running a corporation with these stations just do not patronize their sponsors. It really is a damn shame since another corrupt company (Infinity) pulled a fast one with CBS-FM and great people are left out in the lurch.....and the listening public as well.

Comments: I cannot believe what has happened!! There are so few stations that play "music" anymore and fewer that play the music I want to hear. I was so happy when I found KB on my long and dark drive home from work. Every night the music of my youth made the ride a lot shorter and more enjoyable. Then one Monday I got into the car at 9PM and turned on the radio. There seemed to be a basketball game on. It said 1520 but one of the teams was Buffalo so I said, OK .. basketball tonight. And turned the radio off. The next night there was some obnoxious female spewing political poison. I don't like any of these loud-mouthed hate mongers: on the left or the right. And this certainly wasn't what I wanted to hear on my drive home. For several days I tuned in hoping I had the "dial" set wrong but all I could find was talk talk talk and venom and trash bashing. This is certainly not my idea of "entertainment" or even of "enlightenment" --- and 1520 is no longer a preset number on my car radio. Sad, but one of the last songs I remember hearing on KB was "The Day The Music Died" ......... Are there really people out there who prefer this trash?

Comments: I’ve been mopping around here like someone died and trying to get over the shock.

I grew up with KB when I found it on the radio dial in 1959 in Pennsylvania. I was 12. It was my favorite radio station all through the sixties in Virginia. I never lived in New York until two years ago when I moved back from the west coast. I learned of some songs that I never knew the titles to or the artists like Timi Yuro and others. It was so great to move back here to the east coast and hear that some of the KB personalities were back and they were playing the great music that I missed over the decades. Back in the Sixties when I was in high school, I loved KB so much I thought of moving to Buffalo and possibly become a broadcast engineer with that great station. Just a dream then. I used to roll on the floor when Joey Reynolds was on, at times.

The DJ’s, the personalities, they didn’t just play records. They knew the music. We’ve learned things about the artists that we didn’t know. They didn’t just play records; they also put on a show. That made most other radio stations boring. That’s the way it was then, that’s the way it was now until last week.

I’ve listened to talk radio years ago. Nothing ever happens from it. It’s just entertainment. You hear stuff. It makes you mad. You think talk radio will change things but it doesn’t. You wake up in the morning all angry. You start hating the world. You hate yourself. I had to stop listening to talk radio. I had to feel good again but there is always some corporation like Entercom that ruins my day. The way they changed formats with no warning has me dumbfounded!!

To make KB a talk radio station again is the lowest thing I can think of on earth. If the wonderful music and the fun can’t broadcast from KB’s transmitter, then it’s a waste to have it on. Save the electricity!

I see that Entercom’s stock has a downward trend starting in the beginning of 2004. I hope it hits $10 a share. If I have Entercom in any of my mutual funds, I’m going to sell.

I could say a lot. I was trying to keep this short. But I feel this will be ongoing.

My special thinks goes to the Webmaster of this website. Many thanks to you.

WKBW-WWKB Rest in Peace ;(

Comments: I am disgusted that the oldies format at KB is gone. I grew up in a town 30 miles south of Rochester, NY listening to KB back in the 50's and 60's.
I grew up and still live outside Rochester, NY but have been unable to find a oldies station that only plays those great tunes from 50's and 60's. They mix in 70's & 80's.
I finally found KB several months ago and was delighted. Every time I listened to it I was brought back to a happy childhood time and found out how many good old songs I missed hearing.

Comments: As another fan has already stated, "what a waste of 50,000 watts"! There is nothing on the dial, AM or FM, to match the sound of KB radio, and now it just buzzes with more opinionated blather. In one foul swoop Entercom has alienated listeners from New Brunswick to North Carolina. Given the usual success rate of liberal talk shows, this format might even fail before they can sort out all the angry e-mails (if they have the nerve to read them). Thanks for the awesome website and the means to make our voices heard.

This is a disgrace to the radio industry, and a lot of great talent. I take this very personally and wonder what might be your motivation. Not money. This format is never successful and there is no sane excuse to put a clear channel, 50,000 watt station in the trash.

Why are they telling me to call the Buffalo fools who made the change to the left garbage that’s on! I think all of us should flood the lines in PA. They don’t live here and the people that they left to take care of the Buffalo Stations apparently don’t care about the listeners. Comments: It’s been a week since “the day the music died” … again. The day that WWKB 1520/ Buffalo switched formats. The first time in ‘88 was not unexpected. This time it hurt badly. First, let me state flat out that I don’t live in the area. As a matter of fact, I’m 523 miles away from Buffalo as the crow flies, in down east Maine. So whatever I say won’t influence the powers that be at Entercom or anyone else for that matter.

WKBW is a truly unique station, always has been. Its signal and history will always insure its place of radio greatness. I do applaud Entercom for trying to bring it back to its musical roots for the last three years. The radio “business” has changed so dramatically though, I almost understand why they killed it … again. WKBW was a station for those of us who wanted to keep reliving the glory days of this once great station. The music was secondary compared to hearing Danny and Tom and Jackson and the jingles. And to hear it coming out in mono on the AM band was why I listened. Sure I could hear the same songs on local “oldies”/satellite stations, or on the satellite dish, or remastered CD’s, or burn it off the computer. But that wasn’t WHY I listened to KB. It was for the experience of listening to KB.

As a 48 year old boomer, I grew up in the 60’s and 70’s with the AM band and listening to our local daytimer WGUY 1250/Bangor. After sunset though, the world opened up with WRKO 680/Boston, WBZ 1030/Boston, WMEX 1510/Boston, WNBC 660/New York, WABC 770/New York, WPLR 1540/Albany and THE station that all the ‘cool’ people had on WKBW. I can still recall hearing the Beatles coming through my Dad’s ‘63 Chevy Belair up on Craig’s Pond. Later in ‘76 - ‘77 on my own, KB was playing the latest tunes through my old Chevy Malibu and then my new Ford Pinto. I couldn’t understand why Mom and Dad didn’t like that new music. Now I can understand fully their frustration as the sounds on the current CHR stations make me turn my head and go “huh?”.

In the world of radio, my demographics are quickly becoming unattractive to advertisers. I don’t like it, but I will live with it. I’ve called Greg Ried at 716 843-0600 at Entercom and left my message on his machine. Whether he ever heard it or if he just presses the button to “erase all” each morning, I’ll never know. Either way, it’s not a nice way to treat the public. But then again he’s not hired to serve the public interest outside of Buffalo. Is he even hired to serve the public interest in Buffalo??? It’s too bad that this blowtorch signal that serves the eastern seaboard and Canada is just now another station with programming that is available everywhere else.

Will we see massive campaigning to return the station to what we’d like it to be? Probably not. I think back to the pilot episode of “WKRP In Cincinnati” when the station flipped from “old people” music to rock and roll. I feel like Nedra Volz looking for her cat. No one is going to listen to me anyway because I’m too old. But Entercom will take advantage of any protests to promote the “new KB”. Here just stand underneath this logo while you hold your protest sign.

The powers that be are going to look for that mighty advertising dollar. Will they find it with “Buffalo’s Left Station”? No, but they will use it as a pawn to make one of their other stations in the cluster achieve bigger ratings. And that’s what saddens me the most. The owners have no concept on how to treat this station that was once the crown jewel of radio stations. Or what wkbwradio.com owner David Fill means when he calls it “one of America’s two great radio stations.”

With what I see as programming blunders like this just keeps driving listeners away from terrestrial stations and makes us look harder at XM and Sirius. I was thinking of it before and I’ll look at it even more. I just might wait a little bit longer and see if Jack Armstrong should wind up with Cousin Brucie on Sirius before making a decision.

So long KB. It was nice having you back, even if it was for too short a time and even if it was not at your full potential. I’ll now erase you from my presets but I’ll keep the good memories.

Then I moved back in 1999 and was glad to hear the music again, especially with Dan and Tom. Moved back to Florida last summer and was shocked when I logged on KB's website. Obviously management and owners have no idea what people are wanting to hear. When I first moved back in 99 I listened to Danny and Tom on the WHTT and I really missed them when they left but was really glad when they resurrected KB which ws my choice for the morning show. I wish Danny and Tom and the other DJ's good luck in all their endeavors and hope to hear them again sometime Online. I've taken to recently listening to WHTT again online as our local Oldies station is lame. Hey we need Danny and Tom down here. Come on Danny, Lake Effect Sun is better than Lake Effect Snow!!!

Comments: I moved from Buffalo 4 years ago because of work. KB was my last connection with Buffalo on the radio. I and other people from Buffalo, living in the New England area, counted on KB to give us the touch of home, that we all miss. Now, they turn a fabulous station, into a bias political format. Don't we have enough of these. Especially one that is so bias in the Democrats and Liberals favor.
It's sickening to see all the history being thrown down the tubes by an ownership that has no loyalty to their radio public and their long term employees. You really blew it. You had a specialized market, with a niche of their own. Now your just an ordinary nobody. One more politically bias talk show with the same repetitive agenda. Goodbye KB. Though I live miles away, it saddens me to remove you from my dial. I can only remember you for what you were.

Sincerely,

Comments: I can't express in words my contempt to the management at KB for what they have done. I have listened to KB since I grew up in Medina in the fifties. I remember well there switch to the future sonic sound on July 4, 1958. It has been perhaps the greatest radio station in the US. I was so pleased when it came back on in 2003. I listened every morning going to work and on my home at night. What a low life underhanded thing to do to the personalities who worked so hard to make it a success and not even let them say good bye. I like many others hope their new format sinks fast and big Tim and company are out on their asses looking for work soon! I wish all the best to Danny, Tom ,Jack, Steve and hope they find a new radio home soon.

But, now lets put the ball in Entercom's lap, will they even have any GUTS to respond to ANY of the postings here? Prob'ly not. Also, if the sales staff couldn't do their job and SELL KB Radio, they should have also been FIRED! Someone really pulled a boner on this change, I know I'll never listen to talk radio, especially the empty headed talk that's on just about every where anymore.

Follows a pattern with corporative Cronies I meant phonies. Anyway Tim Wenger’s wife is on WBEN in the morning as Susan Rose with John Zack. Wait a moment. Isn’t Tim the one who fired Dan and is the cause of bring in this non-sense on KB! This proves corporative people are only interested in their own job. It is interesting how the manager of these stations saves his wife’s job and throws away a huge legend like Danny Neaverth isn’t it? You think maybe we should holler loudly and make a lot of noise?

I discovered KB Radio about a year ago; we get the signal as clear as a bell after sundown here in the DC area. I actually enjoyed my evening commutes and travels listening to the awesome oldies and SNARP; KB's play list was FAR superior to our local oldies station. So I was stunned and saddened to hear on the evening of 2/6 that the oldies format had been replaced. Maybe it's time to switch to satellite radio...

What a shame! I believe the management has made a BIG mistake. Regardless of your affiliation, Left-wing talk radio is a proven money loser. Meanwhile, KB was the only AM station I could find that played oldies with any broadcast power. Actually, many of the SNARP callers were not from the Buffalo area. I, for one, will no longer be tuning in to KB. A great loss to music lovers all along the east coast.

I cannot believe the disregard Entercom has for the listeners or the best djs that they could have hired but that's what you get with a corporative giant and a monopoly. All they think about is their ratings and the money it can bring them. The point here is I didn’t live in the 50’s but I enjoyed the format immensely. It made my day. I got up in the morning with Danny move your fanny and went to bed listening to all the oldies that my mom and dad grew up with and on the weekend the SNARP show with Tom Donahue the only show in it’s class that no one can replicate. Why is it when something is good and right and fun someone has to pull the plug. Is it because they just don’t give a dam about us listeners or for that matter Danny or the rest of the crew. I hope the new format goes to hell. Wait it already has! Entercom is sealing their own reputation by what they done. Who made this decision? They never asked the listeners they never took a vote and didn’t even tell us. They didn’t even let the DJs say goodbye. Just like in 1988 the music has died. It’s ashamed. I hope Entercom and the stuffed shirts are happy that they made us miserable.

Sad, but true - the great KB has once again been silenced by the bean-counters. Liberal talk from a satellite lowers overhead and increases profits (but not necessarily ratings). I am applaud Entercom for bringing KB back, but curse them for the decision to abandon the listeners in this format change. KB was a hometown station for all of Eastern America (and Canada) and it sounded great! Cheers to the dedicated staff that returned KB to the air three years ago. You will be sorely missed in this dying industry known as terrestrial radio. And the "suits" in the executive suites have no one to blame but themselves. And thanks to David Fill for this wonderful tribute site to KB!

I listened to it whenever I could and really enjoyed it when I visited Buffalo twice last year.

I am not shocked on the KB format change. Surprised?, Maybe! Somewhere before KB had changed their format the first time, the owners of KB must have had an offer they couldn't refuse, and Sold Out,....either that, or they all were scheduled to be hit with an Ugly Stick but the stick was switched to a "Dumb Stick"!, (The same stick used in Government, Corporate America and largely used on the General Public, starting in the 1970's!!!)! For a good 10 years everyone I knew listened to KB. Once in a great while, I would listen to the old Whistle (WYSL), but within an hour, my Transistor Radio was tuned back to KB. Once KB (WKBW) was Busted by the Government for having both of the media (TV & Radio) for a possible monopoly, it all changed the game! Remembering back, KB sank a bundle of money on buying The Newest technology in being the First Stereo AM Radio Station I've ever heard of!, (Bad Move!)!!! Since the first format change from ROCK & ROLL to talk Radio,... I just changed the dial, and Never Looked Back! After that, I moved away from Bflo, to Rottenchester NY, and twice in 26 years, looked for the KB of old,... but never found the ROCK & ROLL, so turned the radio OFF. After moving to ORLANDO FLORIDA in Nov of 2001, and hearing of KB reintroducing their ROCK & ROLL Format, for Me personally, it was Too Late! The newer R&R Format should have had some versatility in the songs played. I had Friends / Family tape some of KB at sporadic times, and it seemed to me that KB continued playing the same old songs from the 1950's, 1960's & very early 1970's, (Too Cheap To Buy New "Song Recordings"!?!). I am Truly Not Surprised that KB lost whatever common sense...their older listeners...and their Advertisers, that they once had. At this time, I would like to THANK THE OLDER CREW OF WKBW RADIO for providing such great quality Radio, the untiring love of this Site's Designer/Operator, Family and Friends for all their help through many of life's happenings, (News, Weather, Sports). God Bless America! For Complaints about KB's Format change, please contact GREG Ried at 716 843 0600!!!!!!! Terrible decision. Who needs another talk radio station? 1520 will now be erased from my radio's memory. My condolences to the great KB DJ's. Even with local "oldies" stations, I listened to KB whenever possible to get "the real thing." It was the original DJs, the original jingles, etc. that made it special. (Even though I never listened to KB as a kid. Being in Long Island, I listened to the other great radio station, WABC.) A sample of that great format can be heard on 770 AM from 6 to 10 Saturday evenings on the WABC oldies show. See musicradio77.com.

Before I start, please read the next paragraph comment. I think it may be worth while (I hope at least).

Please listen to KB for a while (no mater HOW you hate too) and during their commercials, take note and give the advertiser’s a call and explain to them that they are wasting their money with KB because you will no longer listen to KB or hear their commercials as long as they are in the liberal talk format.
~end of comment~

I grew up with KB in the late 50’s and listed to it while eating lunch at Avon High (they played it in the café) in Avon, NY until I went to the Army, then I still listed to it at night time in Alabama. In my professional life, I listened to it as much as I could when I was driving the eastern seaboard until they went talk radio the first time. KB was a well respected classic oldies AM radio station not only in Western New York, but in a lot of other states up and down the eastern seaboard and Canada as well. KB had what no other AM OR FM radio station could provide... and that was "true classic entertainment". With the releasing of legends Danny Neaverth, the man who made KB and Jack Armstrong, the "Mighty Voice of KB" and one hell of a entertainer and the other GREATS, showed us, your former KB die hard listeners that you have became a legends killer Mr. Ried.

Mr. Ried, as the “new” phrase says; “The Day The Music Died In Buffalo” has become a reality, all at your corporate colleagues thoughtless minds with disregard to your listeners. What are you guys thinking? In my conclusion, R.I.P. KB. Sorry to see you die,

You have got to be joking!! What a classless-clueless decision to change formats at KB radio 1520. First to just do away with Danny and the other jocks without giving them an opportunity to say goodbye to their loyal listeners was terrible. Danny Neaverth, a media icon here in Western NY, and is treated in this manner. Entercom you owe it to Danny to have treated him in a classier way. The music, the fun, the commercials from yesteryear the guests were all wonderful. What a shame. And what a sham.

P.S. To Greg Ried, you had the nerve to make this decision at least have the nerve to answer your phone or return calls. FACE THE MUSIC MR. Ried IF YOU CAN

It is bad enough that most of the Buffalo radio market sucks, but at least KB radio 15.20 was a place that we listeners could turn to for the good old radio the way it was intended to be from the beginning. There is to many all talk radio on today, at least KB was not more of the same old thing repeated over and over. Now that is all that it is. You find one talk station you find them all. These guys like Danny and the others have something that is going to be lost for the children of tomorrow if you don’t bring it back.

My lst job in radio before moving-on to NBC & CBS News in NY was at a radio station on Long Island (WTHE-1520). We had 10,000 watts and had to get off the air at sundown for Buffalo. The signal from KB was so strong that, 15 miles east of the towers (directional east), toward sunset, the KB signal would over-ride ours. What a great station to grow-up with at night on L.I. Even though we had the rock power houses out of NYC, KB was just as competitive and, at times, sounded so much better. One more great/historic piece of our broadcasting history gone due to the the strip-mining of the industry produced by corporate radio! Best wishes, Doug Spero

I spread the word to all my friends and family that there was a decent oldies station on 1520 AM. I did not find this station until this past summer so I guess I missed a lot more. I was always amazed at how well I could hear the music after sundown and early morning here in Baltimore. I will call and voice my opinion. Baltimore lost their so so oldies channel to Jack radio back in the spring of 05 because they said that the numbers were not there to keep the station going. Well there are a lot of us Baby Boomers out there that like their music and I hope we ALL speak up.

Oh, KB, you will be sorely missed here in central New Jersey too! ... I just wanted to share with everyone the following fax message* sent to Entercom last evening:

Date: February 7, 2006
To: Mr. Greg Ried
AM General Manager/Vice President
Entercom Buffalo LLC
* Fax # (716) 843-0250
Ref: WWKB Format Change/Elimination of Classic Oldies Format
From: Burt Stein
Highland Park, NJ

Mr. Ried:

As you surely know deep down, it was clueless bureaucrats such as yourself who put quality radio programming on life support throughout the United States, and Entercom’s sudden transformation of the WKBW classic oldies format to “Buffalo’s Left Channel” just shows there’s no hope of that path ever being abandoned itself.

My family and I knew the “true” classic WKBW decades ago as I grew up in the 1960s/early 1970s, and its brief return in this new century was again cause for celebration, as its signal came in loud and clear even here in Highland Park. Yet, once again, the heart and soul of what once made AM radio great now yields to the counting of beans above all else.

So, let your corporate colleagues now congratulate you and each other for putting one more huge nail in the casket of American broadcasting. It’s a certainty that no one else will do so. And “congratulations” on doing no more or less than what you do best…driving away a large regional audience and firing the finest air staff you’ll probably ever know!

I'm 24 and for the past few years this has been my number one station. In my computer room I only have an AM radio just for KB. When I turned it on Monday night after work I was disappointed, very, very disappointed. I will miss my clock radio waking me up to the morning show and listening before bed. I will miss you KB radio, thanks for the great few years I've had with you!

Sometimes in life, change is inevitable, and this is one of them. AM radio will soon all be talk shows of some kind just due to the nature of the signal. FM is where the music will always be due to its clarity. As for KB, it was the best of times in my life as a kid growing up in sunny Cheektowaga (Go Flyers)! The jocks were the best as well, and the music always came first. Great memories were made in high school with KB on the radio providing the background music in every teens car. Every kids bedroom had that AM radio next to the bed so we could enjoy Joey Reynolds and his 'Purple People Eaters' show. FM radio wasn't interesting to anyone our age back then. People like Danny, Don, Rod, Freddie, and Jeff became household names. Now that all of this has ended once again, and probably for good, it's nice to listen to a format where the music is the main thing and really, there is only one radio station on the FM dial that is doing that. Funny that it is also at the end of the dial like KB was! Thanks for the memories. It was a great trip.

I heard of stupid moves, but this beats all. Changing KB's format was a big mistake.........I listened to the new format on Feb. 7th 2006, and all I can say is that "it really SUCKED". Who's ever idea this was, must really be a MORON. Danny, Tom, Sandy and everyone else will be greatly missed and KB lost a lot of listeners. I hope everyone boycotts KB.

I can't believe that I am even a little upset about the demise of KB as I know it...again. But I am. Are we baby-boomers to be put out to pasture as our parents have been? Imagine my shock to tune in at 6:45 this am to hear how unreasonable the Muslims are in their reaction to Finland's cartoon?! Not how I want to start my morning!!! Radio is entertainment...escape from all crap that is going on. KB took me back to a more carefree time and the personalities could always lighten the mood. WHTT is OK, but it isn't KB. I'll miss it. I'd love to talk to a "real person "about this. I tried calling Greg Ried, but of course I got a recording. So, to Danny, Tom, Sandy, Steve, and crazy Jackson, I'll miss you and hope to find you somewhere on the dial in the future.

I came out of work yesterday (Monday 2/6/06) and was crushed and PO'd to find talk radio had returned. I've been in AM heaven since KB and oldies returned and can't believe us old timers (54) didn't have the demographics to maintain the format. Tell Danny, Tom, Sandy and all the rest I'm sorry we couldn't keep them around. They will be missed - again.

My teen years were spent dialing between KB, WLS and WABC on my old All American 5 Silvertone attached to a couple of hundred feet of old electrical fence wire strung through the trees up in the Adirondacks. AM radio was my window on the world when the sun went down. It sure felt good when KB came back...it sure feels lousy now that it's gone again.

P.S. Occasionally I get tempted to go to satellite radio just to hear Cousin Brucie (at least I think he ended up there). Any chance the KB guys will be appearing there to make it worth my while? I know it won't be the same without KB, but we miss them too!

Stabbed in the heart by a talk is cheap, whinny liberal talk show knife. Entercom has just pissed of the entire east coast of boomers. Understand who has more spending power than any other demographic group. Bring back our KB. Learn how to sell advertising that reaches us. Look into putting KB on the web. There are probably tens of thousands of us who would pay a monthly fee for the music that formed us and made us who we are today. I want to hear Danny in the morning, Jack in the afternoon and Tom doing SNARP on Saturday nights.

PS. What a classless way to deal with great radio people and a great listening audience.

Your method of advising a person that his job is gone is unreal. The line up you describe such as Leslie Marshall does not sound too good. I have heard her on your other stations as a sub and tuned her out. She is in California, just what we need, another exported job. I listen to Joey over night and will now tune into another station. You have lost more listeners than you think with this new venue. And yes, I am one of them. Karolyn Lauffer

People please keep in mind that this is not the stations website it is David's tribute to the once great station. It's not his fault they changed the format.

I wish our opinions would be considered by the station owners but it never works out that way. It's clear they went into the oldies format half-heartedly. Small staff and no promotional budget to speak of.

Someone said they saw the KB cruiser at the Fair with no one around it covered in sawdust! This is what you get when a single company is allowed to own so many stations in a market. The once great Buffalo stations WGR, WBEN, WWKB, and what used to be WYSL (now WWWS) are all owned by Entercom and that's not even counting the FM's they own in Buffalo.

Did KB ever do any contests to get listeners excited? NO! They could have done something like "Cash Call" and it would have helped, but no. They didn't even staff the station much of the time it was automated or voice tracked.

With the format shift at WHTT and the format change at WECK WWKB might have been able to pick up some listeners, now we will never know.

WSAI did a good job with their "Real Oldies" format in Cincinnati they had jocks on all hours except after midnight (when they went paid religion). I knew that KB had one thing that WSAI didn't and that was people all up and down the Eastern seaboard that loved KB.

What happened to the Old Rock and Roll Format of KB? I turned the radio on this morning and all we heard was a stupid talk shiow. The last thing we need in Buffalo is another talk show - call it what you want but my husband and I as well as my many fellow workers will never tune in again - trust me. Danny Neaverth was the best thing going and you blew it. The guy on the radio this morning seemed as ignorant and as backward as both Tom Bauerle and that other Hick, Sandy Beach, on the other "Talk" radio AM show. WBEN AM - and who is that airhead - Leslie Marshall you must be kidding. What an insult - you hurt yourselves. I think these hosts should start looking for another job and Entercom and whatever it is you call yourselves ought to sue the wonderful operators manager or Tim Wenger for his stupidity. It's obvious to everyone already. Also, I'd advise your hosts to do a little research before they go on the air with so much misinformation as they demonstrated the first morning on the air. Shame on all of you. Thanks for ruining it for Buffalo. I hope you get everything you deserve.

I was amazed when KB1520 returned to what made it great right around my birthday in January of 2003. It made it even greater for me personally to hear the great Jack Armstrong read e-mails from me on the air, and to talk with the man himself via e-mail over the next few years. A friend of mine and I managed to locate his theme music from his first stay at KB ("Shimmy Shimmy Walk" by Billy Lee Riley & the Megatons) and send it to him and actually hear him use it again underneath that amazing ending to every night's show, and to hear him thank us for finding it was a joy. Nothing but pure class...he's always had it and always will. So you can imagine my disgust Monday evening, Feb. 6th, 2006 to tune in and hear that KB1520 had let everyone go and had returned to a talk format. KB was a huge part of growing up for me, and the return of the classic KB jocks was the coolest thing I'd heard on the radio, bar none. For Entercom to take it all away again is the ultimate LACK of the class that people like Jackson Armstrong, Danny Neaverth and the rest have always had. Jackson responded to my e-mail that evening, saying that everyone received about five minutes notice, when it should have been the sales staff getting that amount of notice for not realizing they had the greatest people they could have on their station and not doing enough to sell the format. There are few people I hold in the same kind of regard in radio that I always held for KB...Scott Shannon is one, Dale Dorman in Boston is another. these people inspired me to get into radio because they were so damned much FUN to listen to, ALWAYS. The talkers that are on KB now may come up with stimulating topics of discussion and they may make you think...but that's hardly the kind of entertainment that the name "WKBW" was always there with, on such a legendary level. Entercom, you blew it. All that talent wasted...no wonder people like Cousin Bruce Morrow are moving to satellite. I'm sure the air staff at WCBS-FM in New York City, one of whom had just gotten started in radio after an amazing career in music, TV and theater (Micky Dolenz), knows exactly how it feels.

So once again KB Radio 1520 is a memory to a lot of music lovers as well as lovers of some of the best personality radio in the history of rock & roll. The people on the air gave it their best. Too bad the people they worked for couldn't do the same.

It is very sad but true; the music has indeed died at KB Radio. Like what occurred at WCBS-FM in New York City this past Fall, our only surviving AM blowtorch is now just a memory for 50's and 60's music.
This obviously was a corporate decision based upon ratings numbers and audience listening habits. Us Geezer diehards did our best, but when you are up against FM, Satellite, even broadcasting on the Internet, unless you show outstanding numbers in the ratings book, and keep them high, any station format would be pulled. I do not like it either! I will miss Daffy Danny Neaverth, Tom Donahue, Sandy Beach (he will still be on WBEN Talk Radio), Steve Mitchell, Jack Armstrong, Hank Nevins, and the rest of the 21st Century personalities of KB.

Good luck to you all, and thanks for having made KB Radio one of two great radio stations. It was a great ride, while it lasted

Hey everyone. I am a DJ at WXOJ in Northampton, MA. It is a station with a mix of programming and talent. My show features rock, soul, R&B, from all decades. I plan on doing a tribute to the KB radio station this Sunday. I’ll probably get kicked off the air for making an affiliation with another station not relating to mine but sometimes you have to what needs to be done. It was a dream of mine to play rock at KB radio and now it doesn’t look like that is going to happen. So I’m going to act like a 4-year-old and play pretend.
I’ll be playing all the great tunes that KB once played and barking and howling into the night while I do it.
I posted a comment on my myspace.com (Also my radio web site for the time being)
Check it out at www.myspace.com/jaywolfradio
Good luck to all
Here is a copy of the message:

WWKB (WKBW) 1520 am has now died!

The Buffalo, NY station that brought the rock 'n roll format from 1958 to 1988, then returned in 2003 to continue this wonderful format, has now changed to a liberal left wing talk station. This is one more stab to the broadcasting industry. WCBS FM from NYC lost there oldies format last year without notice and now this. Many more oldies stations across the US can eventually expect the same to happen to them in the future. As ipods, internet, satellite radio and lack of talented DJ appear in the world, this is not an issue that is going away! WXOJ nor myself has any affiliation with KB radio or with Entercom.
When I read this news online last night I was taken back. I didn’t want to believe it and I tuned to the station and sure enough it was gone. This station is (was) a huge part of broadcast history and will be missed. For those of you who wish to make some noise about this please contact

I stopped listening to local AM stations one by one as they turned to talk and sports lineups over the last twenty five odd years. I then found the great sounds that just aren't played on the few local FM "Oldie" stations that I can pull in here in Toms River. WKBW. All the local stations play are what I think are the sucky top 40 (really top 10) of the 50's and 60's over and over and over again. They just do not get the fact that plenty of songs that never charted above 20 were really good songs to hear. And should be played. WKBW sure did. Now I have to search the AM dial again for something other than sports talk or liberal and/or conservative political bullshit. Howard Stern just doesn't cut it for me.
Good luck to me and to all of the people involved with the now dead sound of WKBW. (Listening to the UB basketball games also was a memory bringer backer of when I went to CCNY.)

I am in total shock that my one and only radio station is once more taken off the air. I go back with KB to my teen-age years and was so glad when they, Danny and all the KB good-guys came back. If they wanted to make a change to the format than why did "they" have the guts to do it publicly, not like some slime, backyard hide-away individual. This sounds like something someone at the top level of government is doing - secret sabotage of what has so much meaning for all of us baby-boomers. This truely is the day the music died again. Thanks to Danny and all the good-guys from KB. Marty

Another monopoly Entercom Buffalo are you nuts. You got rid of the best guys you could have had and the Humor and down to earth people that we could identify with. KB was something that we needed Humor and reality that we all need in the morning. Again, are you people at Entercom nuts? What is your problem? Are you so damn conceded in your own corporative growth that you don’t care about the listeners? Apparently, the answer is yes! Tim Winger is the AM director of KB, WBEN and Gr. He was on WBEN trying to justify the foolish and stupid decision of putting as he said “commies on” so then I ask you why the hell did he do it? You had the best Station with the best DJS you could have on the east coast. What a waist of 50,000 watts to listen to garbage that we really need like we need a hole in our head. OH! It’s Entercom that’s got a hole in their head. Like I said Entercom has nothing in their head! Bring the DJS back! Bring them back! We don’t need this. Thank you Dave for this wonderful site. The new format that WWKB has is awful, I used to enjoy the nostalgia of KB 1520, you actually played music from the past, had very knowledgeable DJ's, the best in Buffalo for oldies, probably the best in the nation. You lost me as a listener, I had your station on for a few minutes on several occasions this past week, it is probably the worst talk format I have ever heard. I remover the settings off all my car radio's. I would prefer silence over your new format. You ruined a good thing!!!!!!!!!

I was listening to WKBW on my car radio one night in Phila. (in 1968?) when the Beatles album, Yellow Submarine, was first released. The DJ played “Yellow Submarine” over & over, seamlessly without breaks for what seemed like an eternity (15 minutes? or longer?). It was fascinating, even mesmerizing - does anyone else remember this? Being an out-of-towner I never heard anything else about it. Was there any buzz about in Buffalo? Was it a gag? I was so saddened to find the KB format has been changed. I certainly will not be listening to KB any longer. I feel it is a sad statement on society, as a whole, that people feel the need to verbally complain on talk radio. I realize many, including myself, find our world in a very tremulous state. We don't need to be reminded of this every time we turn on a radio! We have enough avenues that bring us this format! TV, newspapers, the internet, our coworkers, to name but a few. Turning on the radio was something I did to relax. KB was the only station I would listen to. The humor and camaraderie shared by the DJ's was so enjoyable! The crew had the innate ability to make people laugh. This is what our world needs more of. The music may be found on CD's, etc. The personalities of the DJ's cannot. I have read the comments on the web site - several have said the comments will make no difference to the management of Entercom. This may be so - but I am the eternal optimist. Please, Mr. Ried, hear the public. Consider the state of your world, as well as mine. You had something very special. Maybe you were unaware of just how special. It would be nice to see you listen to the many who cannot support the type of radio you have chosen to share with the public.

Unbelievable!!!!!
After many years of no KB, a beautiful return to the airwaves in 2003! GREAT MEMORIES...GREAT MUSIC...GREAT DJ'S. And now they are gone again?? Talk radio? Radio has become just like TV, a lot of junk. Just what we needed, another Talk Radio format. KB will truly be missed again. What a shame!!
