FOR THE DEFENSE OF LENINGRAD
Designer: artist N.I.Moskalev Medal "For the Defense of Leningrad" was instituted by the Edict of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of USSR on December 22, 1942. It is the first of medals instituted over the years of the Great Patriotic War. According to the Regulations of the Medal it was awared to: "...service men of units, formations, and organizations of the Red Army, Navy, and NKVD troops who in fact participated in the defense of the city; workers, officials, and other representatives of the civilian population who participated in military activities aimed at defending the city or assisted in the defense of the city. The total number of people decorated with the medal "For the Defense of Leningrad" is 1,470,000, among them are several tens of thousands of children.
