Biographies


Commander W. S. Mayer

Commander Mayer attended Dartmouth College during the period July 1943 to November 1944. He attended Cornell University as a Midshipmen from February 1945 to June 1945 and in June 1945 was commissioned as an Ensign. Commander Mayer has served in various assignments since entering the Navy in May of 1943.

USS Strong ( DD 758 ) from September 1945 to February 1947 as 1st Lieutenant. USS Ault ( DD698 ) from March 1947 until January 1949 as Engineering Officer from January 1949 to June 1949.

Commander Mayer received a Bachelor of Arts degree from George Washington University. He attended General Line School in 1950 and subsequently served as Engineering instructor until May 1951.

Commander Mayer served in the USS Hass ( DE 429 ) as Engineering Officer until June 1952. From the Hass he went to Desron 8 Staff as Squadron Engineer Officer until December 1953.

He then served a tour of duty in Buships at the DD type desk for electronics. From January 1956 to March 1958 he commanded the USS Fearless ( MSO 442 ), a unit of the Mine Force, U. S. Atlantic Fleet, based in Charleston, S. C. He reported to the USS English ( DD-696 ) from the Recruiting Division in the Bureau of Naval Personnel.

Commander Mayer is married to the former Elisabeth G. Pratt of Washington, D. C., and has four children.
