We are seeking information on the USS Percival and her crews. Files and photos may be emailed to us and we will incorporate them into this page. When enough information has been assembled we will then build the ship her own section.

The Clemson Class as Constructed 


Displacement:  1,190 tons (1,308 tons full load)

Length:        314 feet 4 inches

Beam:          30 feet 10 inches

Draught:       9 feet 10 inches

Machinery:     4 Yarrow high pressure boilers

	       2 high power and 2 low power geared Westinghouse 

               turbines; 2-triple blade propellers.



Performance:   27,000 shp for 35 knots

Bunkerage:     375 tons

Range:         5,000 miles on 375 tons of oil  at 14 knots.

               2,500 nautical miles at 20 knots.

Guns:          four 4 inch; one 3 inch

Torpedoes:     twelve 21 inch

Thanks for the reply Mark. Made me feel a lot better! There is a huge place in my heart for these ships, particularly the Clemson Class of my fathers era. I served on three ships during the Viet Nam years, the first one being the Arlington ,AGMR2 (ex Saipan) the second being the Nicholas DD449, and the third being the Constellation (ugh), an awfull experience. My place was the galley...I love to cook. I still use a lot of the navy recipes, broken down of course, such as Mulligatawny Soup, a huge favorite on the Arlington. The cooks on the Arlington were all from the south and many of the selections were southern style. I learned much from them.

I have other nice destroyer photos, some of them taken by my father in the 1920's. I also have a fair amount of motion picture footage of the Clemsons in the 20's and 30's underway, also taken by my father. Some of the footage is of very high quality. I don't know if this footage would be of any interest to the group, but I do have it and it is now on tape. My father said that the crew of the Percival refered to her as the "bargain ship." He was on the Percival from 1923 to 1928. Percival was scrapped in 1930, a sad decision for many Clemsons when we and Britain could have put them to use in the 1940-1941 era.
