Sit back and get comfy, I have a lot to tell you. My name is Kelly W.
Plunkett and I served aboard the Southerland from Sept. 58 to Nov. 62. The
designation of the ship was DDR or radar picket ship. I was only 17 when I
entered the Navy. I had served 18 months in the reserves so I didn't go to
boot camp. I went from my second year of high school right aboard ship. The
next week we left for WestPac. The passage from Point Loma (San Diego) to
Pearl was the worst weather in the previous 30 years. The ship was popping
rivets from the pounding and both gun tubs were collapsed. When we got to
Yokuska we went into dry dock for 30 days for hull repair. And yes I was
sea sick for the full 30 days it took to get to Japan.
I got to know a lot of guys in those 4 years but lost track of all of them
when I left the ship. I would really like to see what they became. I have 4
cruise books with names and last known hometowns if you are interested.
I spent the last 19 years at the Long Beach Naval Shipyard and was able to
get a drawing of the ship that I plan to make a model from someday, when I am
retired. I contacted the Navy Photography department and got a couple of
pictures of the ship which I have framed an keep on my wall. They have
several views of her if anyone is interested. I think I paid $2.00 per
print.
