As promised, this is a picture of me from my time onboard USS Conyngham DDG-17. The picture was taken during one of our many Carribean cruises. This particular location was St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. Unfortunately, I had duty that day and had to remain aboard ship. :(

It wasn't a total disappointment, however, as the previous few days found us in St. Croix, and I got to be part of 5 from my division that were allowed to stay behind on the island while the ship went underway for the day. Since the ship couldn't arrange for civilian assistance in docking upon their return, it was decided that a party of 5 from my division would be allowed to remain behind for the day to help with pierside line handling on its return.

We spent the entire day enjoying the sights in St. Croix, as well as other things.

One of the most impressive memories that I have of the islands was the clarity of the water. We could stand on a pier that was 15' or 20' off the water, and it was so clear the bottom could be seen easily at a depth of 40' to 50' below. It was quite beautiful. There's just one thing to remember... When diving off a pier, make sure you fully complete any 1 1/2 gainers before you hit the water. (grins) Those bellybusters can be a real pain from that high up. ;)
