Thanks for the helpful tips on getting you the information about the Evans. You said you were at Fleet ASW school is 1961? I was there in 62 right out of high school. We had a Jewish instuctor that was just fantastic as a teacher and a person. I can't remember his name but he was good.

I made one cruise with the Evans in 63-64. The aircraft carrier we were with was the Hornet. Most of the cruise was a tremendous learning experience and fun because everything was so new. We were doing things we had never done and experiencing stuff we could only do once. It was a part of my life I won't forget. I even remember being at sea when Kennedy was killed and the only information we had was that he had been assassinated. Since we had just had the Cuban missile crisis the year before, no one knew if we were headed toward a war or what. Kinda spooky when your in the middle of the Pacific and have little information to judge a situation ...

I will try to gather information (pictures) to send. Thanks again for the page. Nice to talk to a fellow sonarman.

_______

Did you check out the page on sonar school? It's accessible from the "About" page. I joined right out of High School too and I was on the Hull in Hong Kong when Kennedy was shot. Everyone remembers where they were at times like that and I was just going into Sonar when someone told me. During the Cuban missile crises I was at sea on the Theodore E. Chandler somewhere between Hong Kong and Subic Bay. I don't remember the powers-that-were telling us much of anything. We were just at sea for nearly a month which was unusual at that time.

You and I had pretty much the same navy "career" it seems. About ten years after my four year regular stint I signed up in the ready reserves and was a weekend warrior for another seven years.

I don't remember any of the instructors at A school but that place was an interesting experience too! Do you remember the little gedunk down by the bay?

Send more pictures and I'll put them in. I am also trying to get as much information about each picture as possible so try to remember as much as you can.

Talk to you later,

Rich
