Louis J. Rucci |
Return-Path:
I was onboard the Mahan Jan 1980 - May 1984. I was EW1 Louis J. Rucci
and the Commanding Officer at the time was Capt Jet Brown. Capt Bill
relieved him sometime between May - June 1984. I wasn't present as I had
been diagnosed with cancer and was convalescing at Portsmouth Naval
Hospital when the change of command took place.
Unfortunately my memory is short and a lot is missing. I may have some
photo's lying around somewhere. One photo is of the Mahan coming
alongside the USS America where I was stationed at the time. It was
interesting to note, that I took a photo of my next sea command without
realizing it at the time.
USS Mahan was fitted with the New Threat Upgrade missile system during
her overhaul at Phila 1979-1980. We spent a lot of time at the Puerto
Rico test range the first three years testing the system. Jokingly
became our second home port.
During one Med cruise we patroled off the coast of Beirut and came close
enough to see the damage to the city. At night we watched the arc of
weaponry light the sky. We escorted the USS New Jersey to Beirut, but
never saw her fire her guns.
I do have a photo somewhere of an ASROC test firing. I'll see if I can
locate it. No promises though.
AS I said, my memory is short. Hope this helps out.
P.S. I did see the Mahan at Phila after her decomissioning. Nothing like
what I remember.
