From: [email protected] As a former crew member of the U.S.S. Chevalier, I am pleased to see a picture of the old girl. I spent a little over a year on the Chevalier and took her to the Far East in the winter of 1958. We stopped in Pearl for a day and a half and then steamed westward between two typhoons. We arrived in Yokosuka, Japan and immediately went into dry dock for work on one of the screws. We moved on to Hong Kong and spent New Year's in Kaohsiung, Formosa (Taiwan). We moved on to Guam and then to Subic Bay in the Phillipines. From there, we left for Coral Sea Days in Melbourne, Australia. We stopped for fuel in Manus in the Admirality Islands. As an FT-1, I suffered mightily as we passed the Equator where I proudly became a Shellback. From Melbourne, we return to the states by way of Pago Pago and Honolulu. After thirty days in San Diego, we moved to Long Beach Naval Shipyard for FRAM where I accepted a discharge to return to the East Coast. After ten years of service, I stayed out. On a vacation trip to Pearl Harbor in 1985, I saw that the Chevalier had been sold to South Korea and was part of their "Navy." I don't know what happened to her after that. Keep up the good work. I will continue to watch for news of the ship in your exciting web page. H. Raymond (Ray) Kimmens
