Hmmm, it's been a while since I've typed that -- USS HOLLISTER (DD 788)--
but I used to do it regularly when I was a Yeoman on board that ship!
I was stationed on the HOLLISTER from December of 1972 until May of 1975.
I started out as a deck seaman-- became an SN, and then made rank as a
YN3. So, I was in the Ship's Office for half of that time.
The ship was in Viet Nam waters when I was dropped aboard, literally
lowered on a cable from a helicopter. I went from the aircraft carrier
SARAGOTA via helo to the HOLLISTER. That was a couple days after
Christmas of 1972. On Dec. 31, 1972, the HOLLISTER was bombed and a
couple of small pieces of shrapnel actually hit the ship and one small
piece scratched the belly of SA Hobbs! Everybody aboard earned Combat
Action Ribbons for that bombing.
Nixon called the troups out of Nam in January of 1973, the HOLLISTER
returned to Long Beach, CA in February, and went into the Reserve Fleet
around May of that year. We took trips to Portland (the Rose Festival),
Mozetlan, Hawaii, Vancouver, Frisco, Seattle, Powell, River B.C., etc.
during the next couple of years. Good times, lot's of fun.
Some of my buddies whom I've seen since, included: Leonard Shanks who
lives in Paris, KY and Ted Booth who lives in Eugene, Ore, Jerry Pinske
who lives in Mpls, MN. Other buddies whom I'd like to know the
where-abouts of include: Mike Wagner, Tommy Sharpe, Adam Gujardo,
Frank Goodman, Randy Hill, Bill Carroll, Wendell White, Hal James... and
many more I'm just not recalling at present.
Nice page. I have lots of HOLLISTER photogs, and etc. But it sounds
like you're already over-worked. Maybe some time I'll scan some if you
want.
