I am a former crewmember from 1987 to the ships decommissioning in 1990. I am now serving aboard the USS RUSSELL (DDG 59). I have a lot of great memories from the ship. I made two deployments aboard her. A UNITAS cruise in 1987 and MED deployment in 1989. There are other sailors on my present ship that were also on ADAMS class destroyers. We often talk about the memories we have of these ships. For a lot of us it was our first experience with sea duty. The crew that decommissioned the JOHN KING really loved that ship. There wasn't a dry eye among the crew when they hauled down the colors for the last time that day. I was a Firecontrolman on her working on the old 39A radar system. I would feel priveledged to provide any information or insights on her that I can.

Richard,

Thanks so much for including me in the contributors section on the JOHN KING. I really enjoyed reading the experiences from ET1 Peck. His experiences are exactly as I remembered them. In the time period that I served aboard, we had to have had one of the greatest crews that have ever been aboard a ship. It brought back a lot of great memories reading Peck's letter. I too remember the day the IOWA had her explosion. I believe we all said a prayer for her crew that day. Also during that same pre-deployment training, the 39A radar antenna broke loose from the foundation and nearly toppled over onto the deck where the captains gig was. We had to pull into Roosevelt Roads, PR in order to have a crane assist us in putting the antenna back on it's foundation. Needless to say, that was the last of the training for us. We had to turn back to Norfolk in order to repair the antenna for the upcoming MED deployment.

I have so many memories of that ship and quite a few pictures to remember her by. Reading Peck's letter has really jogged my memory. I plan to sit down and write my experiences as I remembered them. I'll e-mail them to you and hope that you won't be too bored by them. If I can get some of my pictures scanned I'll send them along also. If not, provide me with a mailing address and I'll send them through the mail. Again, thanks for including me in the contributors section. I look foward to hearing and contributing any information on the JOHN KING.
