Dear Mr. McMichael,
First, I'd like to compliment you on a very comprehensive destroyer web page. The online availability of the DANFS is a great feature. Secondly, in the books department, I'd like to alert you to the recent release of a book about the sinking of the USS Warrington (DD383) by Naval Institute Press. The book, entitled "The Dragon's Breath - Hurricane at Sea" was written by CDR. Robert A. Dawes, Jr. who commanded the Warrington from 1943 until August, 1944, just several weeks before her loss in the Atlantic. CDR. Dawes spent several years researching the events surrounding the sinking and was able to obtain a copy of the Naval Court of Inquiry proceeedings with the aid of his local Congress-man. My uncle Howard, a SF1c, was aboard the Warrington and was one of those lost at sea. I think it's a good read, but then again I'm somewhat biased since I was involved somewhat in the book's development. There is an organization of Warrington survivors and their relatives (Association of the USS Warrington - DD383), which tries to hold annual reunions each September. If you wish to post any information about the organization, I can send you CDR. Dawes address and phone. My email address is: [email protected] . Thanks in advance for passing along the info about the book. Regards, Richard J. Reynolds |
