Was bypassed in the 1980's. Odl Tampa Highway (CR 542) is also the original route of US 92 in the area, bypassed by a railroad underpass in the late 1920's. (Pictures 9-99)
The only vehicles that have worked their way into here have been
the litterbugs and Barbie. The road is overgrown, but the surface
is good and the markings still clear. This is looking west from
the end of the abandoned section.
A few steps forward and a picture looking back east. You can
almost make out the ditch and the road curving to the south.
The trees have nearly shut the old road here, looking west.
End of the road, looking west. Ahead is County Line Road (Polk -
Hillsborough County Line). On the right is the main Tampa -
Orlando rail line which parallels US 92. Mostly covered in leaves
and pine needles is the railroad crossing markings. An
excessively sharp turn across this main rail line is probably the
reason for the abandonment of this section.
End of the road, looking east.
