This page will cover the short Raritan River Railroad that ran
from South Amboy, NJ to New Brunswick, NJ.
It was absorbed into the Conrail system on April 1, 1976. The photos here
were all taken on June 9, 1980.
Although the 1980 date makes this a Conrail operation, very little had changed
from before 1976.
The normal routine was to pick up cars from the
interchange track below South Amboy, pull up past the station and then back
up onto their own track. The train then shoved backwards up the steep
grade out of town.
After topping the hill under the Raritan Street bridge in Sayreville, the train continued out to Parlin. Here the train was broken up and crews used one or two of the five units to switch various customers along the line.

The line from South Amboy to the top of the hill has been removed and the engine
house is gone. Today all service on the line
operates from Browns yard off Bordentown Ave.
The stations shown above were also torn down, but the track remains although
CSAO has requested to abandon the line west
the movable bridge over the South River.
