PENN CENTRAL

This page is for the yard located in Camden, New Jersey known as Pavonia yard.  It was the home terminal for the Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines and the Penn Central used the yard for local operations on the Jersey side and some local work in northeast Philadelphia.  The majority of trains into and out of Pavonia were obviously interchange for the PRSL.  The Penn Central owned 2/3 of the PRSL and the Reading the other 1/3.

The Sunday afternoon line up of units ready for Monday morning assignments included several unusual units.  RSD-12 and RSD-15 Alco 's included.

pc9999pavonia.jpg (104782 bytes)  A real prize this day is the 9999.  The GE 44 tonner was the smallest diesel on PC's fleet and  it was assigned to the trackage near the Fort Dix military base.  With the PRR and LNE cars in the background, this picture could have been taken in the late 1960's, but it was actually June 30, 1977.

Looking more like Marion, Ohio than Pavonia the power assignments changed shortly after the Conrail takeover.  I don't know how well received these old Erie-Lackawanna RS-3's were to the shop guys, but it was a brief stay.  Photos July 6, 1976.
