LONG ISLAND RAILROAD
This page contains just a few images from my few visits to the "island". While I live across the river in NJ, I did not make very many trips east to the area. Regrettably, I did miss the Alco powered passenger trains, but I did capture some views of the former Alco FA cab-units in service as control cars.
With a family friend residing in Ronkonkoma, I visited the town on several occasions. These views are almost totally unrecognizable today. The third rail now ends here and there is a very large service shop east of the station to service the MU cars.
This is former Louisville & Nashville 321, unit 606 in the yard on June 21, 1977.
The GP38's were brand new back in 1977.
Cab control car 608, former Western Maryland 304, is trailing an eastbound heading into the station in 1976.
In this sequence, 608 leads the same consist west toward Jamaica Station with C420 209 pushing. January 2, 1976. Sorry for the poor photo quality.
Another unusual operation back in the 1970's was the use of EMD switchers as power for the passenger trains. Here, fairly new 150 sits on the east end of a trainset at Ronkonkoma with a FA cab control car on the west end. Also, June 11, 1977.
Those little 1,00 horsepower engines were working hard as this westbound leaves town, 6-12-77.
A few miles north of Ronkonkoma is the town of Port Jefferson. At the end of a branch, it also hosted a yard for trains.
FA number 613 was formerly Burlington Northern 4102, nee-Spokane, Portland & Seattle 866.
FA number 616 was formerly Burlington Northern 4116, nee-Spokane, Portland & Seattle 860. June 11, 1977
FA number 604 was formerly Louisville & Nashville 314. Shown here in the newer color scheme at Patchouge station.
Here 604 leads a westbound through Sayville on October 17, 1982.
I do have several more images from a 1973 visit to Ronkonkoma and they will be added as soon as I can find them.
