ERIE LACKAWANNA
This page will continue with the former
Lackawanna Lines west from the Newark area and into the suburban towns.
The Lackawanna
electrified their suburban commuter lines back in the 1930's with Thomas Edison
himself riding the first train.
The first page brought us from
Roseville Ave. and up the short Montclair branch. We will return to the
junction at Roseville Ave.
and head west from there. The mainline was three tracks from Newark to
Millburn.
This is a trackside view of the Roseville Ave. station taken in 1977.
It was rather run-down and I believe it was
was not used even by this time. The Montclair branch is off to the right
and we are looking west.
Another station that had fallen on hard times was this brick building at Grove Street, East Orange. 1977 photo.
This is the westbound station building at East Orange. 11-13-1977.
Trains 959 and 958 meet at the Brick Church Station in East Orange.
Several of these inner stations
were located a very short distance apart resulting in trains operating like city
subways.
The station in Orange is where the main began to turn in southwest
direction.
Note the platform canopy
swings away from the main. 11-13-1977.
Orange, NJ. The more things change, the more they stay the same. 9-18-2011
Again a very short distance away is the Highland Ave. Station in Orange. Highland Ave., 9-18-2011
A little bit further down is the Mountain Station, also in the City of Orange.
Passing through the busy town of South Orange, the Lackawanna elevated the
mainline using a concrete viaduct.
Famous for the Tunkhannock Viaduct out north of Scranton, the Lackawanna used
concrete in many of their construction projects
from the 1920's and 1930's.
Heading almost geographically north, train 960 stops at South Orange on its way to Hoboken. 11-13-77.
One older station that remained after the re-building of the 1920's was this classic wooden building at Maplewood.
Train 961 is swinging around the curve, arriving at Maplewood.. 11-13-1977.
961 stopped at the depot. An image repeated thousands of times for over fifty years.
Train 957 moves from the triple track to the westbound main at Millburn. 8-10-1975.
Train 959 is a long 8 car consist this day. Short Hills. October 15, 1978.
Train number 458 (?) is nearing Short Hills on a hot August 10, 1975.
Yes, it is at the top of the hill, Summit, NJ on November 13, 1977.
It is a quiet Sunday and the rush hour trains await the Monday crowds.
Train 962 from Dover heads east toward Hoboken. November 13, 1977.
Westbound train 959 passes through the point where the Gladstone branch meets the mainline.
Train 959 speeds west toward Dover on the main. August 17, 1975.
