This page will continue the former Pennsylvania railroad mainline across Pennsylvania from Lewsitown to Altoona.
SD50 6701 brings PIEN east near Mount Union, PA in 1990.

Just west of Mount Union is (was?) 'Jacks Tower. It is named after the mountain ridge through which the railroad passes.
6757 brings a coal train eastward through Mapleton. Note the very recent removal of the rail. 1985.

GP38 8092 leads ENIN (Enola-Indianapolis) west through Warrior Ridge, PA.
A new GE 6083 rolls west near Petersburg.
SD40 6518 passes through Spruce Creek.
Amtrak F40 303 brings the eastbound 'Broadway' through Tyrone in the morning of June 22, 1985.

In weather totally appropriate for its name, 'Gray' tower stands in Tyrone.
6720 leads an eastbound coal train by the tower in 1985.
B-30-7 5051 is westbound approaching Altoona.
At the very east end of the Altoona yard area is C.P. Antis. The tower was closed already in this 1985 view.
GP40-2 3403 is westbound at Antis.
A quartet of shut down and ready for retirement GP7 and GP9's sit near Antis.
A white-lined U25B sits in the yard awaiting the scrap yard. Altoona has served the Pennsylvania Railroad, Penn Central, Conrail and now Norfolk Southern as a major locomotive shop.
A single switcher moves through the yard tracks.
6662 and 6667 are former Erie-Lackawanna SD45-2's and were assigned to pusher service by Conrail. Several pairs of the units worked out of Altoona for many years.

'Alto' tower sits at the bottom of the grade and controlled all movements at the west of the yard.

A westbound train begins the tough climb over the backbone of the Allegheny Mountains. Two helpers are on the point and two more push against the caboose. June 22, 1985.
