I saved them after her death because it was such a labor of love for her, and it give me something to remember her by. But I do have several other CKLW year-end and best-of lists, and I've inputted those for your consideration to add to the site.

I will also send you some corrections to the Plannine lists. While Plannine said corrections were welcome, I could see no place to forward them. I'll still do it myself if you have an e-mail for him.

And now, ladies and gentlemen.... my own memories.
At St. David Grade School in Detroit, when the principal announced over the PA what radio stations to listen to in the event of a school closure, when she said, "CKLW," we let out our various (muted) exhortations of "Yeah" and "Aw-RIGHT!"
I remember that the best I could do until the age of 11 in listening to CKLW in a WJR and WCAR-dominated household was sneaking a listen to a Monkees song minutes before "The Monkees" came on, or being at the house of a friend whose older sisters tuned in.
The genie went out of the bottle for good during the riots of 1967. As we were heading north to Imlay City to pick blueberries and get away from the rioting for a day, I implored, along with my older sister Denise, to let us listen to CKLW in the car. "20-20 News!" we told them. "That means news every 20 minutes!" Well, it wasn't quite like that -- there was never any news at the top of the hour -- but my folks never caught on (or let on that they had).
By that Halloween, my sister starting writing down the Big 30 countdown each week. By that Christmas, our allowances were big enough to buy the occasional 45 at Kresge (you could pay anywhere from 66 to 79 cents for a single). And, if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, in January 1968 I started compiling my own list based on the singles that Denise, kid brother Brian and I had purchased, using CKLW's Big 30 chart to provide a parallel, if somewhat delayed, trajectory of our singles' popularity. I started with 33 tunes -- it had to be more than CKLW or WKNR's 31 -- and eventually expanded to 50 as I started including LP tracks. I kept it up every week -- including year-end best of lists -- for four years, until sophomore year in high school started taking precedence over imaginary charts and baseball cards (which went back even further than my affection for CKLW). Denise died in 1981; I've kept her handwritten Big 30 lists all these years.
I even won a "Christmas Wish." My request wasn't for much: a 45-RPM record carrying case and ticket to see "Yellow Submarine." The record case came in the mail, as did a check for $7.50 to cover five admissions to the movie -- which took another couple of months for it to get to the Nortown before the movie house went porno.
But my biggest brush with CKLW was being a contestant in early 1969 in its "Time Machine" contest. The contestant picked any year of the 20th century in advance. Then the station played its account of a news event. If the event happened in the year you guessed, you won $500. Of course, the thought of playing it was a pipe dream, because you'd get a busy signal after dialing the fourth digit; it was practically a reflex action to hang up and try again when the voice on the other line told me I was the correct caller. The year of the event from the last hour was 1917; I made up my mind to guess 1965. The event? The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution -- 1964. Just one year away from $500! As Maxwell Smart would have said, "Missed it by THAT MUCH!" I did get a little 1969 calendar just for playing. The next phone line to be jammed was mine as friends from school -- all of whom listened to CKLW -- tried to call me to tell me that they had heard me.
At that time in my life as an aspiring writer, I wrote out in longhand a newspaper every week. The big drawing card was supposed to be a comic strip featuring a group of animals with superpowers to rid the world of evil -- and of rival animal supergroups set up by my friends down the block. But my first-person account of the CKLW contest story kept me scrawling all week long, even as I was watching "American Bandstand," to make that issue of my paper the best-selling copy ever.
Even to this day, as I have manipulated pop culture to make my points, one of my favorites is the CKLW jingles, especially, "The Motor Cityyyyyyyyyy." But I remember after Robert Kennedy was shot, and later died, how the jingles disappeared and the jocks sounded very subdued as they played non-current songs like Dionne Warwick's "I Say a Little Prayer." It was just like newspaper accounts of foreign leaders' deaths, where state-run radio would play nothing but classical music to honor the dead.
But I also remember that CKLW was a bit more square than Keener 13. CKLW wouldn't play the Bob Seger System's "2+2=?", the Doors' "The Unknown Soldier," or even the Beatles' "The Ballad of John and Yoko." WKNR did. And living just northeast of Detroit City Airport as we did, our ability to get WKNR dropped precipitously at dark. But in a sense, it became more cool to have to fiddle with the dial to listen to Keener. But when sneaking a transistor radio under the covers, your only choice was CKLW.
CKLW's demise? It was less Canadian content regulations than the rise of FM and free-form music. I liked the Stampeders, the Guess Who, the Bells, Anne Murray and Lighthouse. Even if I didn't, who was I to know better? In the last half of the '60s, your choices were few: CKLW, Keener, CHYR in Leamington. But on FM emerged WABX, WKNR-FM, WXYZ-FM (later to become WRIF) and WWWW. Our demographic was getting older and thinking ourselves more sophisticated than what the "AM jams" could give us. But if all you had in your first car was an AM radio, there was really very little else to listen to but CKLW.
Now that I live on the East Coast, I can pick up WJR and CKLW on good nights. I'll try and listen to a Tigers game; the Tigers on WJR have been a constant since God knows when. If only some genius could crank out today's popular music with a wink and a nod to the Big 8's style, then we'd have a winner.

In the ad, all titles were all capitals (with the exception of the "I Can't Get No" part in #4) and bold. On the line underneath the title came the performer's name indented slightly from the title, with the peak month flush right. This was copied as best as I can do, with mistakes and inconsistencies reproduced here, even down to the "Mar." for #11, while every other March is spelled out.

With this survey, CKLW had settled on a format. The titles were flush left in all capital letters, with the artists' names flush right in upper and lower case. In the middle, the ellipses -- you know, dots! ........... The format would hold until at least 1976.

Notes: This started the first of at least three consecutive "Big 80" lists rather than Top 100.... It was also the first of at least three years straight that CKLW followed the same format for its printed chart, with the hewn-in-rock format, not only for the outside cover but also for the headlines on the inside and the back.
