Decimal Point Interstates
To solve the shortage of 3dis, dpis could be made. For example, between I-79 and I-81 would be I-79.1, I-79.2, …, I-79.9. I-99 would become I-79.4. dpis could also have 3dis. For example, a spur into downtown Shusterville would be I-179.4. dpis would be signed like WV's fractional routes with the decimal portion on the bottom to avoid confusion between I-79.4 and I-794.
Interchange Deforming
I was messing around with a cloverleaf and I realized this: a cloverleaf is equivalent to a backwards circle with U-turns! Now for the much-needed explanation:
[PICTURES coming soon, sorry]
The circle at the bottom is *clockwise*, so you drive on the left side of each "road" coming out. For example, 1 to 3 is a thru route. 1 comes in at the top, and leaves on the right as 3. The weird thingys outside the circle in the "medians" are U-turns. To see the equivalence, look at 1 to 3 again. First is a right exit to 4 (U-turn). Then a right merge (enter the circle). Then a right exit (leaf or stay in circle). Then a right merge from 4 (U-turn). The circle is what you get when you "tour" the cloverleaf by taking all the loops.
Analagously, a 4-level stack is an intersection in England with no right turns and with U-turns. I'll leave it to you to figure this one out.
This would be an alternative to the "almost freeway" discussed on mtr, still supporting continuous thru traffic but with a traffic light.
