NJ 6XX Routes (County)

NJ 5XX Routes (State secondary but county maintained)
See a map of all the 5XX routes (with some random 6XX routes thrown in).
The NJ 5XX routes were established before 1951 as a cross-state secondary road system. They replaced early experiments with NJ 2XX routes in northeastern NJ. They are signed with a county pentagon and are county maintained (I think they all are). Later the 6XX system (county), with overflow to 7XX and maybe 8XX, was made to supplement to 5XX system. This system was voluntary, and all counties but 2 (Monmouth and Bergen) switched to it. Those 2 counties still use 1 and 2 digit county routes (and some 3 digit in Bergen). Many of the SPUR and ALT routes have been recently turned over to 6XX routes.
The 5XX routes are in a grid system, from 502 on the north to 550 on the south. The N-S routes go from 501 on the east to 521 on the west, then further south is 523 to 535 (523 and 525 are out of place, but still roughly fit into the grid), then 537 to 545, then 547 to GGAA!!! (it works out) Numbers bigger than these were put in randomly after the system was created.
Gray numbers are decommissioned.

Uses Ridge Rd west of Amtrak NE Corridor but when new alignment is done it will move
Last time I saw (early 1996), the new alignment was 4LD with 2-way stops where new 522 stops (!) a little east of NJ 27, then 2LU to US 1 (and signs at US 1 said NOT A THROUGH STREET), UC to New Rd, and completed 4LD to 681 (Kingston Ln). The 522 signs at old 522 on US 1 were removed, IIRC. But NJDOT still has it on the old alignment, and calls the new alignment "New Alignment" on the SLD.
The new alignment opened in mid December 1999, which is 4 lanes west of Kingston Ln (681) and 2 lanes east of there to US 130. An article is here. Either CR 522 still uses the old alignment east of Kingston Ln (681) or it multiplexes with US 130.

This is my favorite of the 5XX routes. I lived about 1 mile from it. One day we (my family) decided to go to Costco in Wayne (NJ 23 at US 46). With some of my influence, we agreed we would take 527 all the way up. The route was not well marked at certain junctions, but with the help of a map, we found our way along 527 to the end. This was probably my first roadgeeking experience. Another time, we went down 527 to the southern end. So I've been on about 99% (ggaa! that evil number!) of 527 (the other 1% was missed by mistakes). This road passes thru cities (New Brunswick), small towns (Englishtown), and boring empty areas (Ocean County). According to Carl Norris, it has been unsigned north of 506 until very recently (4-00). This signing north of 506 is part of Essex County massively signing its 6XX routes as well.

S NJ 166 at 527 in Toms River
N 547 at CR 21 south of I-195 exit 31
NJ 444 (GSP) exits 90 and 91 (and crosses NJ 444 again in Monmouth County without an interchange)
4LD semi-jughandled superhighway connector from NJ 37 to NJ 70 (actually to 631, just south of NJ 70, and then along 631 to NJ 70) serving as a free alternate to NJ 444 (GSP)
NB crossing the county line it is easier to continue straight on Sally Ike Rd into Monmouth County rather than turning left at Herbertsville Rd, and then make a left at the end of Sally Ike Rd (then Metedeconk Rd (?)) onto CR 21, then merge back into 549 to avoid a stop sign at small angle at this intersection with CR 21.
