Spanish American War Veterans in

New Mexico

Contributed by David Minton

The Photo:

Below is a photo of several Spanish American War veterans from, New Mexico. The ribbons they are wearing seems to indicate that the occasion for the photo may have been a reunion of some sort, possibly a Rough Riders reunion. The man in the lower left, is wearing two ribbons. One is similar to that worn by the other six, but the other appears to be a Rough Riders First Reunion (1899) ribbon (to see one of these ribbons, click here). Since this photo is obviously much later than 1899, he obviously dug it out to wear as a relic of times past. The ribbon that all six are wearing appears to be a United Spanish War Veterans ribbon.

The man in the upper right is  John D. Wagner (1st U.S. Volunteer Infantry - "Rough Riders" - Troop M). Frank C. Brito, (1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry -"Rough Riders"- Troop I) is in the upper left.
