Below is the obituary for William L.Heitman of the 2nd Ohio Infantry. He was buried in Hagerman, Chaves County, New Mexico.

William L. Heitman was born in New Bremen Ohio on April 26th, 1877.  He moved to Hagerman in 1905, but returned to New Bremen in 1908 and married Miss Emma Drake.  He and his new bride then returned to Hagerman where they had two children and farmed there.  Their children were Captain W. L. Heitman in the U.S. Army Signal Corps and Frederick C. Heitman with Consolidated Aircraft Corporation at Fort Worth Texas.

Heitman had been a farmer four miles northwest of Hagerman but when health problems and farm labor problems became to much for him, he committed suicide in June 1943.  According to his obituary he arose early and left the house in a truck about 6 a.m. for his sheep camp a few hundred yards from the house.  Several of the farm people who were eating breakfast heard a shot and went at once to the sheep camp.  He was found there dead,  having committed suicide.  Mr Heitman used a shotgun, placing the muzzle in his mouth and killing himself instantly.

He left a note for his wife asking her to forgive him.  They were both very prominent in Hagerman and were very active socially and in church activities.
