This medal, properly called the "Medal of the Veterans of the Spanish American War," was awarded to American who could prove that they fought with the Cubans, and it had to be applied for. A copy of a Certificate of award indicates that this medal was presented to Corp. Oscar P. Ruth, on September 7, 1953.
The style of the medal is similar to the Liberator

The reverse reads: "FIRST. / THAT THE/ PEOPLE OF THE/ISLAND OF CUBA/ARE,
AND OF/RIGHT OUGHT/TO BE, FREE, AND/INDEPENDENT./FROM THE JOINT/RESOLUTION
