General:

The following is the printed history of the 49th Iowa, Company F and biographies of its officers.

The History:

"Company F was originally organized as Company B of the First Regiment, Iowa National Guard, but was later changed to Company M, of the Second Regiment. In 1897 it was again changed to Company F, of the First Regiment, which designation it had at the time of being mustered into the Volunteer Army.  Its first Captain was Captain KELLY, who helped to organize the Company at Tipton, Iowa.  He was succeeded by Captain OFFATT, who in turn was succeeded by Captain Louis J. ROWELL, its present Captain.

Captain Louis J. ROWELL was born and reared in Tipton, Iowa, where he still lives.  He was educated in the public schools of Tipton, and later graduated from the Iowa State University as a lawyer.  He joined Company F at Tipton, February 18, 1888, rose rapidly from the ranks, and was made Captain on the 28th of May, 1894.  As a civilian, Captain ROWELL practises his profession at Tipton, Iowa.

First Lieutenant Frank H. GUNSOLUS was born in Tipton, Iowa.  Was educated in the public schools there, and later took a course in civil engineering at Lehigh University, Bethlehem, PA., having just graduated when the call to arms came.  His military career began in his home town when he joined Company F, January 4th, 1890.  He was made First Lieutenant June 22d, 1896, and served on General Hasbrouck's staff at Camp Cuba Libre.

Second Lieutenant John E. BARTLEY was born in Cedar County, Iowa, October 21st, 1866; was educated in Tipton publics schools and the Iowa Agricultural College.  He joined Company F at Tipton on May 21st, 1887, and was elected to his present rank June 22d, 1896.  In civil life Lieutenant BARTLEY is a tiller of the soil, and lives at Atalissa, Iowa, which he has made his home for two years."
