Second O.V.I. [Ohio Volunteer Infantry]

"Second Regiment O. V. I., Chickamauga Park, Ga., [Camp Thomas], June 3, - A peculiar case came before the surgeons of the Second regiment, Wednesday, and one that puzzled them considerably for awhile. Private Bowser, of Company L reported at the hospital, suffering from intense pain in his head. An examination revealed hundreds of maggots in his right ear. Bowser said that the day before a fly crawled into his ear, and was there about two hours before it could be removed. The case was treated with chloroform..."
