Horseshoe Bend in Frankford Creek to be Removed

Work will begin tomorrow on removal of a horseshoe that never brought anything other than bad luck. Upward of 1,000 men will being the straightening of Frankford creek, between Margaret and Bridge sts. This city-CWA project marks the culmination of efforts over a 50-year period to improve conditions in this section. The creek will be straightened a distance of 350 feet across the mouth of the horseshoe, and will be 100 feet wide and 10 feet deep. Earth which is excavated will be used to fill in the present horseshoe channel. James A. Dunn, president of the Frankford Business Men's Association [said]..."This will help alleviate flood conditions, which have long caused property and financial loss, will open up the creek to small boats from the Delaware River to Orthodox st., and will improve sanitary conditions." ... It is expected the work will be completed within a month.
