Frankford Creek Horseshoe Removed in Juniata Park
SOURCE: Bulletin, May 8, 1949
A sluice gate will be opened Thursday to divert Frankford Creek into a new 900 foot channel, eliminating a 2,500-foot loop of the creek through Juniata Park golf course.
The feat of taking the kink out of the stream's bed is an important phase of the Frankford Creek flood control project....Straightening the creek's course will prevent the flood conditions which have been a major problem, causing extensive property damage in that area....
The large U-shaped loop which is being abandoned will be filled in and become part of the golf course. As the loop passes underneath Wyoming av., the project will eventually permit the elimination of two arch bridges carrying the street over the creek.
The work is being carried out under a $625,000 contract which also includes the construction of a new bridge over the creek in Castor av. The bridge will provide a north and south highway connection in the Northeast and permit traffic to bypass the Frankford business district. It is expected to be open by Labor Day.
