The Colonel Commandant

The Office dates back to 1 April 1727 when Colonel Albert Borgard was appointed the first Colonel of the Royal Regiment of Artillery.

In New Zealand, the Colonel Commandant of the Royal Regiment of New Zealand Artillery is a distinguished retired Gunner who is selected alternately from Regular and Territorial Officers of the rank of full Colonel or above.

He is not concerned with the operational or tactical affairs of the Regiment. His duties are confined to certain specific domestic matters concerning the general well-being of the Regiment. You might say he acts as the "father of the Regiment".
