I joined RF Cadets in January 1956 and graduated into the RNZA in Dec 1957. I was posted to the ND Training Depot as an Instructor and when CMT finished was posted to 16 Fd Regt when it reformed. I attended lots of courses and was promoted to Bombardier in Jul 59. I was posted to RF Depot in Jul 61 and promoted to Sgt in Jun 62. I applied for a tour to Malaya and was posted to Burnham in Mar 63 and Malaya as a Platoon Sergeant in Nov 63. I served in Malaya until Apr 65 when I was RTNZ and posted to RF Cadet School. I was posted to 161 Bty Depot in mid 66 and thence to Sth Vietnam as BC's Survey Sgt in Jan 67 where I remained until RTNZ in Jan 68. I was then posted to the School Of Arty as an Instructor on loan-back to 1 Loc Tp. I stayed there on promotion to SSgt and then WO2 until I was posted to RF Depot for another tour, and then one intake at NSTU until being posted to 32(E) Bty in Christchurch as BSM until May 76 when I was posted back to the School of Arty as an Instructor (Loc) and then promoted to WO1 and SMIG(Loc) in Apr 77. At this stage I felt that I had progressed as far as possible and applied for a QM commission. I was promoted Lt&QM in Nov 77 and posted to RF Cadet School and then promoted Capt&QM in Dec 78 and posted as Adjutant Fort Dorset. I stayed there until Aug 81 when I took my release and bought a car-grooming business. That fell to bits in Jul 82 when Muldoon placed a wage & price freeze on everything and the business fell over. I re-enlisted in Jan 84 and was posted to Waiouru as a staff officer and remained there until Sep 86 when I was posted to Army GS and thence to Defence HQ here I was promoted to Major in Apr 87 in Support Branch. I remained there until Nov 89 when I retired in my 33rd year of service. Since retirement I worked as a storeman for IBM in Petone for a year and joined Armourguard as an Armoured Car Officer (carrying cash about the countryside) where I am still employed. I am a member of the Lower Hutt RSA, a Past Master of the Stokes Valley Masonic Lodge, a member of the EVSA and Malayan Veterans Assn, the RF Cadet Assn, and of course the NZ Permanent Force Old Comrades Assn. I have four children, who are all adult and two live overseas, and two in the Wellington area. September 2001 Members' home page | 16 Field Regiment
