I left the New Zealand Army in 1987 to become the Registrar of the then Wellington Teachers College, later to be renamed the Wellington College of Education. In 1989, Julie and I decided to settle in Australia where I was offered an appointment as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Royal Australian Artillery. During my six years of service in Canberra, I directed the Army establishments section, attended the Joint Services Staff College, completed a Masters Degree in Defence Studies through the University of New South Wales, and became the Chief of General Staff's strategic adviser, responsible for Army's input into the 1994 Defence White paper. I retired from the Australian Army at the end of 1994, entering the busy and demanding world of management consultants. After two years with one company learning the ropes, I joined Cogent Business Solutions in 1996 where I remain, working hard but enjoying the challenge. I am one of few consultants in Australia specialising in the specification of corporate support services and hospital clinical services. Currently I am assisting the Department of Defence with the market testing of all Health Services, and with the South Australian hospitals managing their re-tendering for hospital support services. In 1999 I took up competitive masters rowing and have attended all the Australian state and national masters' regattas (and winning medals) and have just returned from competing in the World Masters' Games. I row either bow or stroke side in eights, fours and pairs, and also row skulls (double and quad). |
