Do not confuse this H.M.S. Hood with her later namesake, the more famous victim of the Bismarck. Be sure to visit H.M.S. Hood Association's History of H.M.S. Hood which includes information on the four ships in the Royal Navy named Hood and the seafaring family which gave them their names. The pre-Dreadnought Hood is the third Royal Navy ship to bear the name. She was the last low-freeboard battleship every built for the Royal Navy. Named after the First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir Arthur Hood, she was laid down in 1889 and launched in 1891. After a quiet peacetime career, she was scuttled as a block ship in the south entrance to Portland harbor in 1914.
Turning keel up while sinking, she is now known as "Old hole in the wall". The wreck of H.M.S. Hood has become a quite popular diving location.
