The Gangut had a displacement of 7,000 tons, carried 33 guns of different caliber, and had a crew compliment of of 582. In the summer of 1897, the ship was broken by an uncharted rock and sank in six hours to a depth of 31 meters. A Swedish salvage operation in 1898-1899 recovered some of the wreck. It's location was subsequently forgotten and it's location became Finnish territorial waters. It was found again in 1988 by a group of Soviet and Polish youth and is now a diving attraction.
