The 7th Mississippi Infantry regiment also known as part of "The High Pressure Brigade" was organized at Corinth, Mississippi, in April 1861.

Some of the states finest young men eagerly signed to fight with the unit. Amite, Covington, Franklin, Holmes, Lawrence, Marion, Pike, and Yalobusha counties all sent volunteers.

The Regiments first dutys were on the gulf coast. By early 1862 the unit was a part of the great Army of Tennessee. December 1863 saw the unit being consolidated with the 9th Mississippi Infantry. This lasted from November 1863 to April 1865.

On april 9 1865 the unit was at Smithfield, N.C. It was then consolidated with the 9th, 10th, 41st, and 44th Inf. regiments. Also consolidated with the 9th inf. Battalion (sharpshooter) to become designated the 9th Mississippi Inf.

The unit was in the Carolinas campaign until surrendered on April 26, 1865.If the information i have is correct the Regimental flag is in the safe keeping of the Museum of the Confederacy

On the morning of February 27, 1862 the 7th was aboard a train on the New Orleans, Jackson, and Great Northern railroad on their way to Jackson.
Gen. Beauregard had called for reinforcments to stop Gen. Grants offensive into Mississippi.
About 7:00 A.M. a train hauling lumber slammed head on into the troop train. Some casualty reports are listed as 29 dead (22 on scene) and 14 seriously wounded. One half these severe enough to be discharged.
Co. K and Co. H were closest to the engine and Co. H was so beat up that they were exempted from the line at Shiloh.

ironically the 7th would be involved in yet another train wreck in 1863 in Alabama.
